As my 99 VR-4 prob going on sale I have considered a 91 VR-4 saloon - 2.0 turbo AWD/AWS - on sale in UK

Has anyone had any experience of these?

I know limited numbers went to USA over a two year period but were they sold in NZ or OZ?

Interior/trim may vary but I would have thought that basic engine/turbo should be similar although USA may have had lower power due to emission regs

As the rally progenitor of the Evo I believe that it will have considerable potential for tuning

Any feedback from past or current owners?

You're spot on there mate, for sure they are very supported in NZ and I have seen many 1/4 mile times in the 12's for them ;)

I have a 1991 GTi 4WD4WS and can confirm that, while not the same as a VR4, they are still great fun - there is also the potential for a direct engine transplant from any 4G63 Turbo made up to the Evolution 3 :-b

As regards the VR4, the 6 gen was produced between 1989 and 1993, sold in Japan as well as the states and there are a few in this country[all imports], although the only one I know of was owned by Zedy1 [Mo] of this site and was burnt out by vandals a few weeks back - he has since succesfully fitted the engine into an Evo 1 he found somewhere :)

I wouldnt know about all of them, but My GTi has the same spec as a VR4 [down to the same interior, bodykit, even wheels !] so if you could find another one like this you can always do an engine swap/reshell later to get the turbo madness you require :)

Hoep this has been of some help, any questions don't hesitate to ask/PM me - Your resident 6Gen expert :rolleyes5

Thanks for info so far - want to stick with VR-4

Keen on turbo/AWD and AWS should be fun and I like the 91-92 saloon style

How does AWS feel? - and benefits?

Now you have mentioned gti I have found some for sale

Might actually think about those as poss replacements rather than more expensive turbo

Still uncertain about what next

My 99 VR-4 going on sale this w/e at latest so looking more seriously now

Still interested in anyone who has upgraded brakes/suspension

?sources for tuning/upgrade parts

My prev experience is with Wincanton Motor Services but now found NR Autos in Lincolnshire

Seem a good place for Mitsy care/support/servicing/tuning and they will chat about your needs/answer questions

Engine should be no trouble for power upgrades but as always looking to improve brakes/suspension first - if I end up buying one of them

Thas what I worry about if I use eBay but.......

Seen your VR-4 before but checked out your photos

The engine seems likely to be ? similar to FTO ? 2.0 V6 but with turbo

I prefer saloon style with 2.0 4G63 engine although I love sound of V6 thru 3" decat system on my VR-4

Hope your sale goes ahead

AWS doesnt really 'feel' at all; it is only operational above 30mph, and steers the rear wheels up to 1.5 degrees in the same direction as the front wheels, to prevent the back end from wallowing about :)

The result is a nice, tight cornering feel, as if the car were half the length it actually is - changing direction is also acheived with little body roll or wallowing, and I have found a hueg improvement in this since fitting a front upper strut-brace.

DOn't know if it was brakes/suspension for the 6G you were interested in, but I have upgraded my standard braking system so far with direct replacement pads & discs by Black Diamond [they actually list the cars, so shouldnt be hassle getting the bits !] on the front; I also have rear pads & discs and a goodridge braided hose kit on order for fitting as soon as it is all in stock. After that, Whiteline have a number of suspension upgrade kits available and I intend upgrading my anti-roll bars & bushes using their products. Not sure what I'll do for suspension, but since the whole GTi setup is identical to the VR4 sourcing these parts also shouldn't cause a problem :)

If you approach it with an open mind, the GTi won't dissappoint [although it's no VR4] and the seeming lack of power can soon be overcome with the simple addition of a custom exhaust & HKS induction kit [again listed for VR4 of the same age]

Here endeth the rambling :lipsrseal

Thanks Japmetal for that info - really useful and by the sound of it the AWS that does happen does give a feel of sharp turn-in and feel of a smaller car

And as far as interlpers are concerned, you are right, 'scots' was not the term I was looking for but we will not go into that

Re the thread, I did not get where I am today without knowing a hijack when I read one so be warned I knows what you was up to!

And Ian, as my VR-4 going on the market with poss replacement by the aforementioned Galant AWD/AWS, why not get rid of the 'amazing 2.0 GLS' and have my 99 VR-4?

You know it makes sense and if you are to make an offer, you can def hijack this thread to negotiate

I think that ship has sailed

If capital letters are anything to go by then someone is shouting on the forum

I guess my joking about the thread being hijacked by interlopers has not gone down too well and offence has already been taken

I have seen this before where humour cannot be recognised - no inflexion in a voice to be heard, no expression in a face or gestures to be seen whilst speaking

I cannot get used to emoticons or whatever those f'in things are so I just have my inimitable Yorkshire turn of phrase

I am sorry if it has been taken the wrong way but sensitivity is not a thing to bring onto a forum where so little can be felt to mean so much

AND

in our own CVR4 forums I would not wish to upset anyone - if I had really taken offence and mean to insult someone then I would have not been so polite - blunt speaking is the forte of us Yorkshire folk from gods own county so lets not fall out over a bit of jestin

And just to be clear about it, I have found the car that I want, assuming it does not get sold before I have some money - a 91 VR-4 AWD/AWS with 4G63 engine - I was actually looking for input from current/prev owners of similar cars about tuning/handling etc but thank you again for your help from t'other side o'Hadrians Wall

And thanks again Japmetal, yes you have a meaningful existence for a few more weeks at least - keep your car for even longer and pass on more bits of help and you could be geting a ride in a VR-4 (91or 99)at a trackday - if I can get back on track in the near future

Thanks again for all visitors to (my) the thread

And to answer Brind - I bought car when in London with more pay/fewer outgoings but moved north, bought house, ended up eventually in lower paid job and now job situation uncertain so money is driving factor

Fair enough. Let's all leave it there then, eh?:)

One last observation... Emoticons are good - use them!:-D
You don't even need to remember the keyboard combinations :rolleyes5 - they're clickable from the side of the posting window as you've probably seen. Just type and click and you too can pepper your postings with lots of :argue:-avoiding eye candy!:-D

Didnt want to sound accusing Chris; I don't think anyone actually was upset, I could just see where it may have headed is all ;)

As for the car, if you can find a 6G VR4 jump on it with both feet & all hands [and other appendages] if it's what you want and you can stomach the running costs [my non-turbo still runs somewhere close to 25mpg if I'm good !] dont worry about the info - that's why we're all here afterall !

AS for me, I intend to tune up the handling of my GTi for now, concentrating on not needing power [by not needing to slow down for corners !] until I get to a stage where I can manage the GTi/Evo III engine swap and show these guys how the other half roll :rolleyes5

Thanks Japmetal - not upset by your comments but with the capitals appearing I think emotions were getting aroused already but glad we have a peaceful and contented forum now

Info always appreciated and I cannot imagine running costs of 91 VR-4 being more than my 99 car

I have found both Gti and turbo VR-4 of the 91-92 era so choice available, if 99 car sold so...Kieran, car ready and waiting for you or any other interested soul reading this

Before 99 car is sold it looks like I may manage one more visit to Nurburgring Nordschleife - group will include hopefully MR2 turbos, Mazda RX7 turbo, an Evo 7 and Nissan 350Z from Italy plus my VR-4

Should be going Fri 13 Aug 0700 Dover ferry and returning either Mon 16 or Tue 17 Aug prob 1400 or 1515 ferry

More likely to be Tue 17 Aug return

Anyone want a ride out to the Ring as passenger with me or bring your car

If passenger you pay your hotel, food and drink - no other costs - journey is more pleasant with a passenger although we travel as a group usually

Italian cars will be joining us from Sicily and Genoa

Hopefully ferry journies will coincide/meet at Dover or we may meet en route in France or Belgium

So, anyone interested? - what about you Japmetal?

regarding running cost of 91 vr4

i only got 120 miles for 38 quid (hope that helps)

Japmetal
26-07-2004, 10:02 PM
Going on what Mo ahs just said, my experiences with my own car, and a few of my mates with GTi-Rs & other turbo-nutters I reckon you should expect to pay about the same to run a 6G as to run a later model [although I imagine insurance may be cheaper, I wouldnt honestly know !]

The area you'll really save is if you do your services yourself, since most of this is easy stuff & for a car of it's age [at least 12 years old] I dont think people will look so much for full dealer history as how the car actually looks/feels/sounds :)

chris g
26-07-2004, 10:24 PM
Hi zedy1

Thanks for that - about fuel consumption I assume unlesss that was 38 quids worth of food consumed for every 120 mls driving - sounds like a calorie consuming car - for the driver at least

But I think my car was same at Ring - similar fuel guzzling

And Japmetal - if running costs are same then I may not get to save much money - perhaps on ins partic if I go 3rdpf&t

As for saving on servicing costs - no way, as I am to car maintenance what Douglas Bader was to football - f'in useless

And anyway I work to keep a mechanic employed and his family well fed and run his car so no savings there!

Thanks scottish ian - good info about usa views on performance and handling and details of power output etc

I see the usa got the turbo version and that engine - 4G63 - came from the Eclipse - a model that I know little of in UK - did it ever come to UK - if so did it have turbo in UK - was it another bland looking mitsubishi model - we do not seem to have a history of turbo petrol models in UK

The 4G63 engien didn't 'come' from the Eclipse; it had been in use for a few years in various older models before the Galant, but had a revamp [complete with all-new 16V twim-cam head] for the then flagship Galant VR4, although they did use it in other models too.

The Eclipse is a USA-only model [although some LHD imports can be found in this and other countries] and is far from bland - think two-seater coupe, similar to the FTO but lower & curvier. There was even a 2G one in The Fast and The Furious [the neon green coupe with blue & white decals that gets blown up early on !] and a brand-nwe 3G on in Too Fast Too Furious [Purple with funny grid 'spiderweb' pattern on it !]

The 4G63T as fitted to the Eclipse was still pretty beefy [around 200Bhp] but did not have the benefit of the Ralliart tuning applied to the VR4 and [later on] Evolution spec engines ;)

I actually know of someone who blew up their Evo 2 engine, and had an Eclipse engine shipped in & rebuilt since this was cheaper than actually buying a 'genuine' Evolutoin engine :rolleyes5

I bow to your superior knowledge

I was not speaking from personal knowledge, I was repeating what was on a US website for a review of Mitsubishi cars and specifically the VR-4

Reminder for future - if repeating info then mention the source

Don't worry, I'm just happy to be a source of useful information for once - I can't help much with the 6A13TT, but I know's my Sh£% when it comes to the 4G63 :)

I realised they were fast with other posts here and other websites about ET at strips and activities of owners in USA/Oz

What is surprising is your comment about reliability

What sort of things are going wrong?

I see the usa got the turbo version and that engine - 4G63 - came from the Eclipse - a model that I know little of in UK - did it ever come to UK - if so did it have turbo in UK - was it another bland looking mitsubishi model - we do not seem to have a history of turbo petrol models in UK

If you have Need for Speed Underground there is a Mitsi Eclipse available in that. Very tasty looking motor imo.

i own a 1988 gti and have found tuning parts hard to get hold of so have had to resort to designing my own.mine pulls like a train though just with a filter and backbox with 172.5lbft of torque which is nearly 50 up on standard.if anyone knows where i can get poly bushes for it let me know.
