hi all was wondering b4 i go and spend me money if i am right in thinking my alternator has died
i was driving down the road and my battery indicater came on 2/3 mile down road my ayc srs abs oil well all lights came on and started chugging as if i was running out of petrol and eventuly dyed with no power whatsoever so called a relative to see if they had a spare battery knocking about an hour and half later she turned up with 3 equaley dead batterys so connected cars up via jump leads and tryed to charge mine after 20 mins or so tested it and it work perfectly for about 3 mile and sunddenly died again so had to tow her home eventuly im suspecting the alternator is the issue

Sounds like the alternator. given the warning light and symptoms.
Check the belt isn't slipping or loose, but it does sound like the car is running off the battery until it is flat. I am sure there are a few folk breaking cars at the mo, so you could get a second one.

According to ASA: different partnumbers, due to different specs: max current for a VR4 alternator appears to be 120Amps, while a 'regular' V6 (6A13) alternator is rated as 100Amps max. I'd go for the right thing!

could it be that the battery is no good or would the alternater keep it ticking over and would die after trying to restart

Disconnect the battery while it's running (carefully), and if the alternator is bad the car will die instantly.

Umm disconnecting the battery while the alternator is a BAD idea - it can fry the alternator because it has nothing to charge.

Even for just a moment? Probably best not to do it then :p

get the car started by jumping it, and then while its running put a multi meter across the terminals of the battery, note the voltage, then whilst the meter is connected, rev the engine the voltage should rise with the revs to a peak of around 14.4-9 volts, if it doesn't then its your alternator.

great stuff thought thee was a simple way but couldnot remember for the life of me is there any way of cheking the alternater volt regulator

not really, the easiest way is to do the above method and measure its output voltage

An auto sparky can also test the output of the alternator, he might be able to do a quick test for a tenner.

i just put charge in a battery over night put it in me car and voltage metre is reading 11.34v under exeleration it drops to 11.28v dose this indecate that the alternator is w*nkard ?

Looks like it's not doing very much at all! As Paul said, while running, the voltage should be around 14.5V.
