Hi my 97 Legnum VR4 has developed a small fault while under heavy acceleration, it feels like it drops out of gear and then engages the gear again. Under medium load all is fine. Has anybody got any possible fixes for this issue?

When did you last have the Trans serviced and fluid replenished ?
Have you refilled it yourself or someone else with the wrong fluid?

These autoboxes are sensitive to the right fluids

ahhh, I havent had it long at all. like a few days, was going to get it serviced soon so they should be able to fix this if it is the fluid.

Cheers

Judging by the brief description of the symptoms provided it sounds as if it could have the incorrect transmission fluid in it.

Either way, if you have only had it a few days and seemingly have no service history, it would pay to probably:

1. Check the condition of the existing ATF fluid. To do this the car needs to be at operating temperature. Park the car on a flat service and engage P, hold it there for 1 or 2 seconds and replicate this for R, N, D, across into tip and hit + to engage 2, then back to D, N, R, P and R and leave in N.

2. Get out and check the ATF level - the dipstick should be nice and moist with a faint ruby red colour. If the dipstick is either dry or black - this points to either:

2.1 : DRY - not enough ATF or possible torque converter seal failure
2.2 : BLACK - change the ATF

3. If all of the above checks out, then it possible has the wrong ATF. Only use Mitsubishi Diamond Queen SPIII or Amsoil ATF. Castrol TQ95 has been shown to work as well. Dexron III is a definite no-no.

Could you take a video of the dash to show what is happening?
