Looking to spend around £500 for a nail that will return around 60mpg on a daily commute round the M25 and back.

Do you want at least a little bit of comfort?

If so, 306/406/Mondeo diesel.

If not, AX diesel?

Yeah, 306 1.9 turbo d or 2.0 HDI are favourite, and ax diesel has also been on the list. Mudano is probably a little lardy for what I want really.

Harder to find than you'd think - because they go back up in value as they get more economical!

I remember looking at so many options when I was looking for a daily hack (http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33542).

Obviously, I ended up plumping for the Swift of Justice (http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34293)!

Naturally, a lot of it will be personal preference, and whether the increased purchase price of an ecomical car can be balanced. That's the main reason why I didn't end up with a diesel - the 'premium' they seem to command.

You'll struggle to find a HDi engined car for £500, but the DTurbo's were a good enough engine, agricultural, but reliable and frugal, although not 60mpg frugal, they'll touch 50 if you're steady.

Watch this space :) I may have located a 2.0 HDi for £600. Well serviced but panel damage (been keyed in places and a few bits of external trim missing).

you could go for the little brother, 106 diesel, mate had one, it was small but it was a bit more frugal than his 4.6 V8 range rover. i think he was getting 50-60 mpg all day. but he said it was not nice to drive. 306 would be much better for that. brother has a 1.9 Dturbo (as a town hack) about 90 bhp, but it is very chuckable.

Yeah, some driving pleasure would be good, and I know the 306 is a good little car to chuck around.
