I'm physically fine.. a bit shaken and SO gutted. The radiator was pushed right up against the engine, leaking coolant all over the road. The front crash bar has hardly moved, it sneaked under the bus, but everything above it has been pushed back a foot.

No, I rear ended the bus.. I was coming up the road slowly, because I had sun in my eyes, only to find a bus parked in the middle of the road.

gutted for you, that sickening feeling does lift after a while.

glad no one was hurt. but you have pointed out a major problem with large vehicles. the crash barriers are only designed to protect them selves. if you were going any faster you could have disappeared right under the back of the bus.

makes you think.

Far out Scott - that's surprising news and whilst sorry for your loss am really happy that you're okay.

Did the airbag deploy?

Yeah, I was very lucky in hindsight. I've seen footage of a car of some sort rear ending an american school bus, and the car pretty much disintegrated.

No, the air bag didn't deploy.. I was going that slow.

I've always thought it was illegal to park across from an intersection? If it is, does that have any bearing on responsibility?

Sorry to hear bro. Are you sure that it's totaled coz it looks like the lower front hasn't been hardly touched. The bumper and guard look fine, just the bonnet, a liitle of one guard and some of the engine looks munted.

scott.mohekey
23-03-2010, 12:37 AM
The guards are folded in at the front, and all of the center top chassis below the bonnet is pushed back. I didn't have a close look at the chassis rails, but I'd be surprised if they weren't bent a bit.

man that sucks. look on the bright side, you now have more parts to build your project with :)

scott.mohekey
23-03-2010, 01:01 AM
It's at the panel beaters being assessed at the moment. It definitely needs some chassis panels welded.

Funnily enough, I already have a spare red bonnet, and guards. And the center grille was off the car due to a flat battery experience a couple of weekends ago, so that's undamaged too. I also have spare AC condensor, intercooler etc.. just no radiator.

Edit: Oh, and the spare front bumper I have is a bit tatty.

I've attached a quick diagram showing how it happened. The bus was PARKED in this position. Not to scale.

sorry to hear this scott. hope insurance play fair. i will have radiator somewhere you are welcome to it if needed.

Thanks Thom. Who has knowledge of the repair process? I.e. if I can supply most of the parts, what happens?

scott.mohekey
23-03-2010, 03:03 AM
This attachment shows that the rear of the bus was directly opposite the near side of the intersection.

As well as what appears to be a driveway in the foreground of the picture... which is also illegal.

Don't think it makes one bit of difference whether or not he was doing something wrong.

The only way he would be responsible is if he backed into you.

Regardless, as you told me before, the cops weren't called out in any case so it's a moot point as far as I know. But at least you wont be getting into trouble either.

:speechles good luck getting it fix i dont like seeing nice cars getting wrecked

scott.mohekey

Just got off the phone from the repair place. They believe its fixable, and are just waiting on the decision of the assessor as to whether its 'beyond economical repair'.

So it looks like it could be a day or so till I know.

I had a similar prang here (http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showpost.php?p=255217&postcount=23) = $7,500 cost paid for by the insurance company.

So I understand the pain.

scott.mohekey
23-03-2010, 04:55 AM
It looks like mine could cost even more than that then... sounds like a write off then!

fuel
23-03-2010, 05:08 AM
I think it's definitely repairable. If you strip off most from the front end yourself and then drop it off to a decent shop with replacement panels it would be far cheaper. The excess cost comes from the panel beaters having to strip everything and sourcing new panels (take note at the word new).

a friend of mine just stacked his AW11 MR2 bending the very ends of the front chassis rails and doing similar damage to the bonnet etc, and he's getting it repaired for well under $2000 I think.

scott.mohekey
23-03-2010, 05:29 AM
Yeah, but if I want the insurance company to pay for it, they'll want to do it there way as far as I understand?

Gly
23-03-2010, 06:23 AM
firstly, bad luck about the car, but good that you walked away from it....

sadly you wont get much say in it,

and its basically comes down to whatever is financial best for them,

you may be able to convince them to use your spares to save money,
but why should you have to?? thats what insurance if for.

IMO, if they write it off and you really love this car, buy it back and fix it for cash, (if they dont de-reg the car)

otherwise buy dave's galant or bradc's legnum with the insurance money.

Oh yuk, sorry to see all this. Sort of know how you feel, somebody ran into the back of mine a while ago and it was touch and go for repairs/write off. Glad you're unhurt though.

Good luck with the insurance claim. I hope you can either have it repaired or replaced to your satisfaction.

Glad you were also not hurt.

I had a look at the car this morning when I went to collect all my cds etc. I should have taken some pictures but I was in a hurry for work.

Now that all the bent/broken pieces are off the car, and the bent chassis parts around the lights and bonnet clip are pulled roughly into place, it doesn't really look all that bad. The frontal impact bar is bent down a little, which would suggest that the chassis rails MAY be slightly bent, but it looks like the bolts took the brunt of it, and it was largely a downward motion.

It's funny, even though its in such a sorry state, seeing it after being away from it for a few days makes me realize how good it actually looks in red with black trim and wheels.

Heard from the assessor today.. Cost of repair was going to be $5000, so its being written off. Have to wait and see how much money I have left over from the payout after my loan is paid off to see whether I can afford to buy it back for parts.

chchthomo
31-03-2010, 05:01 AM
not good news. hope the payout is fair market value.and it allows you to purchase back.

scott.mohekey
31-03-2010, 05:03 AM
Payout will be $5700 minus the $500 excess.
