What a bummer Karl, but I assume there was quite a gap between setting the policy up and them chasing you up with the 7 day threat ?

I'm due a renewal in July and will be dropping from fully comp to TPFT. I am currently paying £800 fully comp with 6yrs protected NCB (though I have 10 years clean driving) and ALL the mods declared.

Keep looking around. Try the specialist insurers as they will give you a much better price.

£1800 here, tpft but only 1 years no claims, and one fault claim on record with just under 3 years driving experience

Karl - the whole not being insured before on a high performance car is bollocks from whichever company you were with. I went from a 130bhp rover to a 197 bhp prelude without any issues, and then from there to the vr4 with no problems with Bell!

Guys, please please please make sure to check that your insurance is actually for the right car. A 2.5litre V6 twin turbo is not the same as the 2.5litre V6. I have been quoted for and sent confirmation emails claiming that the insurance policy I wanted to take out was for the VR4. The insurers actually had the car listed as the normal V6-24. They were adamant that they had the right car for me, but obviously I knew that they didnt! Suffice to say I didnt take the policy with them.

Many of the mainstream insurers do not deal with imported cars. If they say they do, please double and triple check that they have the right info as a mistake on their part will invalidate the insurance and could go balls-up when you actually need it.

Even to the extent of the car being listed as a Galant VR4 on your policy when the V5 document lists it as a Legnum VR4. The insurers could turn around as say that they wont pay out due to a minor discrepancy.

It is a little disconcerting when I see so many differences in policy quote prices and insurers from mainstream to specialists. I am always concerned that you may not have the right policy.

Living in a badlands area always fires up the policy like mad. My friend lives just 5 miles away and his insurance is double mine because his postcode starts with MK for Milton Keynes. If your folks or other family members live in a better postcode area i wonder if you could insure the car at their address so as to save a lot of money.
'
Also anyone paying £1000+ had to really think if fully comp is worth it. That's a large proportion of the cars value. If you are being quoted so much just by having tpft for a couple of years and assuming you don't have a crash you will save the value of the car in no time, after that if you do have a crash then you will have already saved the money to be able to pay it out to fix it and you wouldn't have spent any more that if you had been paying fully comp all the way through.

Whilst not 'fronting' per se, this could be a form of insurance fraud, so really shouldn't be recommended.

Try Sky insurance as Club VR4 members get a 20% discount. I am paying £580 for a 30 year old with 8 years ncb, good luck.

I was paying £330 fully comp with some minor mods before I moved. I now pay 600€ a year TPFT because I'm covered anywhere in Europe inc. UK. The premium was 1200-1300€ if I went FC. They don't seem to care how many miles I do and I don't have to have an alarm, let alone a Thatcham approved one. So far I've saved 1500€ in premiums by not going FC, 2100€ if you count the fact they insured me for the first year without taking payment :) I reckon they'd only pay out 3000€ for the car anyway so one more year and it's paid for itself.....kind of.

TPFT isn't worth bothering with in my opinion, why insure a car for hundreds of pounds to not get anything out of it if you have a fault claim?

Shop around, comprehensive is rarely so much more expensive that TPFT that it becomes a viable option. A £3000 quote them giving you the finger, someone will want your business and they'll be competitive for it too.

Karl, I'm insured with Allianz in Germany. I think the only reason we get cover on UK cars though is because we're living her for the time being. They insure the car rather than the driver of the car and that means that anyone who's held a full licence for a certain period of time is allowed to drive my car, as long as it's not for extended periods of time.

For me TPFT was a necessity but I'm seriously considering going back to FC for peace of mind. I'm also going to fit an alarm, just so I can have remote central locking LOL

Admiral all the way for me. I upgraded to my VR4 last September. I was a good-boy and listed all of the mods .... non standard exhaust, upgraded wheels, upgraded brakes, +25% more power. At 39 years old with >6 years NCB, they charged me £525 fully comp which I thought was quite resonable. This is considering that I was having quotes upto £1500 and refusals to quote from some so-called performance car specialist insurers. Also added a second car a bit later on and got a great deal as a multi car policy.

I can only second what Nev said above, it seems odd that Admiral are willing to insure a modified car let alone a modified VR4. When I was looking in the UK Admiral only listed a V6 and the Ralliart imported VR4, when I asked them about one that's not either of those they told me they can't insure it.

The policy was rigthly cancelled, the company would have no coice in that.

and could not be reinstated

This bit puzzles me, did they give you a reason why? Most companies would allow you another chance and probably at the same or similar premium to what you paid before.

If it's on record that you've had a policy cancelled, it may be causing you the high costs....?

Check with your broker, Quinn Direct Insurance in Ireland went into the hands of administrators this morning. Its still trading but looks like writing is on the wall.

I was going to post up about that, Mike!

All current policies remain in place and making claims is still done the same way. They are no longer allowed to underwrite new policies, however.

It's likely to trade on anyway, but if not, the business would be taken over by another insurance provider, AFAIK.
