Mazda 3? fundamentally a focus, but with the Japanese twist...

We've had one for a few months now and we quite like it.

keep the Golf and modify it slightly, start on the look's .. alloy's, coilover's, R32 spoiler kit :) the 1.9dti has a bit of power in it but if you were to get it remapped it would give many car's on the road a fright & it would still have good MPG :D

Focus isn't a bad choice - You do hear of lots of problems, however in some ways that's a good thing - Nothings unknown and given the vast numbers that Ford shift in the UK, the fact that their general reliability rating in Magazine/JD Power surveys is still good must count for a thing or two.

The earlier TDDI engine is a carry-over from the Escort. Well proven but coarse and not that quick. It'll feel like a backwards step from the Golf, particularly if your Golf is one of the Pumpe-Duse versions (Red DI in TDI).

The later TDCI engine is far more modern. I've only experience of the 115ps 1.8 version (In a Focus Mk 1.5), but it was quite smooth and in gear it was quick. Fuel pumps seem a weak spot on them though.

thought about Kia or Hyundai? if i were going for a new car i'd deffo consider them, the Kia's have some nice looking car's (4x4) now and along with the 5yr service, part's & labour warranty with them you'd be getting almost free running out of them.

No worries - It's worth reading what Honest John has to say about them too. HJ lists what's good and bad and concentrates more on what a car is like to live with, rather than how quickly it can go around a corner. The current Focus is listed at the top, scroll down to get the earlier versions:

I'd really suggest you try the remap first. The 1.9TDi has a bit of poke anyway, but the extra horses and torques released by a remap transforms the car!

What's your budget? What version is the Golf you have?

prob bout 4k 3k off the golf and ill put a grand or so to it
its abog standard golf 1.9tdi no red eye ect think it has an ashtray tho lol joking aside it does have a tape deck installed not seen one of them in a golf since the mkII lol

I think the stock 1.9TDi is 110bhp. The remap should help you see 140+ with oodles more torque.

My brother has an A4 2.0TDi (140bhp) and his remap has taken the car to over 170bhp now and loads more torque. It has really made a difference with the car. My suggestion would be to try that route as its only a couple of hundred squids. Then if your missus doesnt like it, you can go out and look for something else.

i am stuck in a focus atm and while its not a vr4 it does take a hell of beating and never seems to complain and parts and servicing are cheap enough and easy to find (anyone got the middle bit for my vr4's front bumper) while it is a pretty soulless car i've driven worse

Middle part of the bumper can be had, colour coded, from your dealer for around £40.

Last of the /Hijack, but as Steve says, you can get these from the Mitsi mean stealership for about £40.

IIRC, yours is a Trigger Mauve PFL Leggie. In which case, the part number you require is MR325378, aka COVER KIT, FR BUMPER, in Trigger Mauve.
