Hi guys

We think the auto in our little runabout is crapping itself so are looking at either flicking it, or potentially changing it to a manual as I've found a guy on trade me wrecking a manual one.

My question is, how much work is it really to change it over? I've removed gearboxes etc before, and am pretty confident swinging a spanner, but the big thing for us is hidden costs. Obviously with two VR4's to feed we are keen to keep the viento, but at the same time the whole point of a runabout is to save money not to spend it!

It's in reasonable shape, and has only done 134000km so I'd be keen to hang onto it...

Any advice would be greatly received.

shouldnt be overly difficult. depending on how much of the doner car is left, and how much he wants for it, id buy the whole car

the swap is really easy as the car has seperate wires and ECU's for engine management and gearbox management.

Should be pretty much the same like the manual conversion on the 8G VR-4's.

You need:
- pedals (brake / clutch)
- clutch master cylinder
- clutch slave cylinder
- clutch piping
- flywheel and clutch

As Subaru ETA said, by the whole car and take out whatever you need for the manual conversion.

cheers

you will need to cut a hole in the firewall for the clutch master cylinder as the autos don't have this hole. you can either just remove the auto trans computer (heck even leave it in!) and leave the gear selector switch stuck in the 'P' or 'N' position and tuck it away in the engine bay somewhere (behind the battery perhaps), or you could remove the TCU and auto trans related wiring and then ground the inhibitor switch input on the ECU.
