View Full Version : Intake elbow seal - issues and solutions?

I've just had a look under the bonnet and my 'new' intake elbow seal is already becoming shredded! This is the third one I've gone through now in less than two years of ownership :o

Was wondering if my bodge-plan would work to use some long strips of rubber (maybe a bike tyre innertube?) to wrap around and use some kind of rubber sealant to fix the damn thing in place. There is obviously the issue with the temperatures generated in the engine bay, so does anyone have any idea what, if any, rubber and sealant could be used for this? I'm finding that the plactic tabs that should wrap around the rubber seal starts to slip out of the clamp. The clamp itself then goes and rips through the rubber seal rendering it useless! Hopefully adding extra rubber should cause the taps to sit further apart and then the clamp wont slip off?

The alternative and less cost effective way would be to do what Swinks has done and manufacture one of my own, but I cant afford to do that just at the moment. Need a quick fix as I dont want to be driving and lose the pipe all of a sudden and roll to a stop!

It may be an issue withj the edge of the elbow itself Atik .. If it's been on and off or blown off multiple times? The edge becomes chamferred and no amount of new seals or tight clamps will keep it on :( (You need good old oak for that job :D )

I have 2 Elbows here in good condition, also with seals..

With a good elbow and seal and a Decent Clamp /yes I can supply 1 of these also /yes You won't have any issues whatever the heat generated.. I've been running peak of just over 1.1 bar with no issues..
Also ensuring that the seal, elbow and throttle body are completely free from grease/oil will ensure a good seal.
And wedje the back of the elbow tight onto the trottle body with a piece of wood or summat so it doesn't move away from the throttle body whilst tightening /yes

I found that after someone did the clamp my elbow up too tight, it stuffed the plastic and would never seat properly after that.

The Clamps i have are Sprung.. So as not to overtighten..

Think thats what the problem is, overtightened clamp causing the plastic to not sit right. Which is why I'm thinking if I put a bit of extra rubber, it'll hold the plastic out further?

but it's mainly due to the elbow not being held against the throttle body whilst being tightened. It moves away from the thottle body, and the the clamp only catches part of it and squishes the seal..
by wedging the elbow with something between the righthand side of the elbow and the top strut under the brace. It keeps it all in place for tightening /yes This is all made easier as mentioned, if all the parts are oil and grease free. I usually use brake cleaner to do the job ...

Ok, will give that a go tonight before the seal gets totally shredded.

Just a thought...

Would some rubber pipe be suitable to use as a seal? Just been wondering about solutions as the car is currently off the road.

Was thinking of a suitably sized/length 'Samco' style rubber pipe to fit over the intake, and then the elbow to be clamped over that. It'd be much more hardwearing than the stock rubber seal?

Cool - not that I need to go down that route just yet ;) Thanks Wodj

Just nice to know I can use something else if needed. Might even keep a bit of rubber pipe handy in the boot just incase this happens again.

If you take the time to prep the the intake to ensure it's not oiled up 1st.. It won't budge..

use injector/carb cleaner to do this it will make them squeaky clean in seconds.

Armed and ready to tackle this on the weekend :)

Will also be changing all the jubilee style clamps to Mikalor style ones. Gonna change (eventually) all piping and add colour coded shrouds so the engine bay looks neater.
