What age/type of golf is it?

the wifes old mk2 gti 16v would do this randomly but never overheated. try topping up the coolant tank (if its low). also make sure the connector is pushed fully home on the sensor on top of the reservoir. turned out the sensor on her golf was a little geriatric & overly sensitive so wasn't anything to worry about in the end

My old mk2 gti 16v would do exactly the same.

It's worth checking all thats said in the above posts tho.

Agreed - Check the car out, but it's a bit of a known issue, apparently - my bros' does exactly the same thing on a run.
