Does anyone know for certain if you have to be the registered keeper of a car that you insure?

I always thought not but a friend has been given the fright of her life by an insurance company saying otherwise .......

This came up on someone else's thread very recently.

AFAIK, it is not a legal requirement. I am absolutely certain it is not a problem between partners/spouses - when I got the Leggie and we sold Amy's Astra, the V6 was insured in Amy's name, but I remained as registered keeper - a fact which was communicated to the insurance company.

Besides, as the law will tell you, the registered keeper shown at DVLA does not necessarily reflect the *owner* of the car.

Anyway - I have also previously insured (admittedly short term) my friend's Impreza (a couple of years ago).

Nev is dead right - I have insured several vehicles I am not the registered keeper of - It is always wise to let the insurance co know though

No, you do not.

But it is often one of the questions on the proposal form. An incorrect answer would be a breach of contract and might lead the insurance company to void the contract in the event of a claim.
