Looks like the engine formula will be returning to the good old '80s:

"F1 teams are close to agreeing a new engine formula for the six-year period beginning in 2013. El Mundo Deportivo newspaper says an in-principle agreement has been reached for a four cylinder, 1.5 litre engine equipped with a twin-turbo and direct injection. The new formula would also involve KERS."

Bring on 5.5 bar of boost (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_One#Big_business)!! /woot

Wow this is exciting news! I'm sure the people at Renault will be rubbing their hands in delight. Could this also herald the reemergence of Porsche onto the scene to relive the heady days of TAG McLaren's success during the 80s?

BMW did well in the Turbo era, too, didnt they?

They won 1 x constructor's title with Brabham in 1983.

Yep, their 1500cc straight four production block motor developed about 1500hp in qualifying tune if I remember correctly. It lasted about 3 laps! The engine builders bought old blocks that have done about 100 000 miles and were therefore well "cured" from scrap yards to build the F1 motors as new "uncured" blocks tended to crack.

well i think you can still get one of the F1 twin turbo engines and where from donington F1 museam i wounder if that one will go missing. but i dont think it is a straight 4 cylinder.

atually it might not be one of the 1500cc engines because it is ford engine and a V8.
but has got 2 turbos and it is out of a f1 race car.

the bottom pic is a monster of a turbo

Is it not from an Indy car? They ran Cosworh V8 turbos at some stage.

Davezj

i could well be an Indy car engine.

the orange McLaren is an indy car, probably based on the m8 or 6 chassis with a ford dfv-t in it, I'll double check with Dad later as he probably built it :D

and as for tub's in f1, has Bernie been spying on me? We had a conversation at work about this last year, Think what it will do for road engines and turbo development.

lets hope the pansies don't get tc back at the same time, wet Monoco with no tc and turbos, bring it on/rally

Nope. It's Cosworth. And it says "last turbo off F1":

The Ford F1 turbo engine was a V6, not a V8. It was build and designed by Cosworth though. The V8 turbo Cosworth was a 2.6l called the DFX and was used in Indy car racing, not F1 IIRC! It would not have complied with F1 regulations being a 2.6 liter. The only V8 F1 turbo engine (1500cc) that I am aware of was the Alfa Romeo unit.

That one on Dave's picture is a V6 twin turbo 1500cc. So it's F1 one.

i have just had a look back at the picture and your are right it is a V6, you can just see the 3 exhaust pipes on the right hand bank. looked very big for a 1500cc engine though.

just a thought, that McLaren will be a chevy, probably a small block, The big block they fitted in the can-am cars when fitted with twin turbos was around the 1200 bhp mark, in a 700 kg car with 13" wheels and steel brakes, in 1969ish :vogel:

This truely crazy:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_917

The 5.374 litre 12 cylinder (90.0 x 70.4 mm) twin-turbocharged engine could produce 1,580 bhp (1,180 kW) in qualifying tune, with twin turbochargers run up to full boost, a simply astonishing 39 psi (2.7 bar), though it usually raced with around 1,100 bhp (820 kW) at 7,800 rpm to preserve the engine. Whilst weighing only in at 1800 lb (816 kg), giving it a power to weight of 1967.36 bhp/tonne in qualifying tune and 1369.68 bhp/tonne in race tune. The 917/30 dominated the Can-Am series during the 1973 season. The 917/30 could go from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 1.9 seconds, 0-100 mph (160 km/h) in 3.9 seconds, 0-200 mph (320 km/h) in 10.9 seconds, and on to a top speed of 260 mph (420 km/h) +,

Ja - I could not imagine how difficult it must have been to try and contain that car.

That McLaren would be a M16(1971) or maybe M15(1970) and the engine is an Offenhauser developing around 1000hp. The Offy's were first produced in the early 1930's! All McLaren Indy cars were running Offenhausers (98ci, 4 cylinder)

Jody Scheckter said they didn't pay him enough to drive that thing! I saw it driven by George Vollmer during a demo run at the Melbourne GP a few years ago. Awesome car!

Interesting post-F1 career for Jody - think he had a firearms' academy and dabbled in farming technology IIRC?

william

Yes, he drove the Can-Am Porches before his F1 career took off. He made his millions with firearms simulation software or something like that after he retired from F1
