Right, The Legnum has gone to the vr-4ish boneyard, so i will be on the lookout for another estate in the coming months.
I cant afford to run anything too juicy as i have a van to run for work.
Needs to be fairly economical and preferably a turbo diseasel.
Thinking about a civic aerodeck.....but dunno if they do a diesel
May stick with another Galant estate if i find a decent GDI at the right price, and what are the running costs like. Mpg?
So suggestions for around or under £1500? any ideas???

Not much in the way of Jap estates with turbo-diesel motors really, until you start getting to the more recent Accords, etc. I suspect the earlier efforts might be a bit clunky and pointless!

Yeah there ain't too many until later models. What sort of budget have you got? You could probably pick up an old scooby sport or something that would be fairly cheap to run. If not if its reliability you are after & got to be diesel, German will be the way forward
You won't get one under £1500.
Don't bother with a GDI.
For that cash, a Civic Aerodeck 1.6 looks a good bet, as does the Lancer 1.6. Both reasonably economical, and maintenance costs likely to be less than many.

I hate French cars but there is no doubt their TD engines are solid enough, hence why all taxis used to be 406's. I think the Civic is the best choice but if you are after mega MPG & don't mind something boring, you could always have a look at an Avensis. At least it will last forever

If you're not too worried about giving it some love, then you'll get a higher mileage Audi A4 1.9TDI Avant in SE spec.
Mondeo estate TD....cheap to fix.
You'd probably pick up the more powerful Passat TDI for £2000 in good condition, as well: you get quite a lot of car for your money!
Octavia Diesel, perhaps?
You might even find a decent BMW Tourer in diesel for £1500....it'll be high miles though...or an Auto.

mate get the civic aerodeck there awesome...b18c4 lump is brilliant, gearing is a bit long but you do get a lim slip chucked in as standard...and it will do 40mpg.
60 in about 8seconds....
Theres a fair bit you can do to the engine mod wise also, just by buying teg parts...(same engine overall)

Pointless if its to replace a VR4 though :jester: spending all that money for 'teg' parts!

Whilst I agree with what you're saying, Alan, and you've stayed within the remit of being a Jap estate....it's not a diesel, and I'm damn sure you'll never see 40mpg out of it.

well mr steve i owned the VTI-s the rare one without the estate bit....it will do 40mpg on a run :)
Its a 1.8 pete...179hp - about 120lbft of torque but it revs to like 8500 its amazing with a zorst haha...
Bit fot a VAFC lower the VTEC crossover point you can get a touch more MPG an alot more power....
Plus later on you can add ITR pistons and valvetrain....or simple things like the inlet/exhaust manifolds to free up a few ponnies!
They do have potential for an N/A car to make ok power
Go test drive one!

In alans defence i did only say "preferably a diesel".
I could be swayed to a petrol so long as it is fairly economical around town.
I quite like the thought of 'keeping it jap'

the best part you can fit to a aerodeck is the integra type R gearbox.....
It transforms it

what about a Mazda 6?
Arent they a bit pricey??
Can't go wrong with an Avensis; average performance, but good ride and build quality and ultimate reliability.

Nope, you can get the Avensis mega cheap now as they have been replaced twice. CDX with a decent spec or SR looks ok. You can get them under £1000 so for £1500 possibly a half decent one
again, arent they a bit over my pathetic £1500 budget?
I don't think so. The older shape can be picked up for peanuts I believe. My old top spec saloon certainly went cheap a few years back.

Sure we've all already said beemer!?
And seriously - you got 40mpg out of a big heavy aerodeck with a 1.8 engine? Mine was underpowered with a 2.0L!!!!
Forget the Subarus - they're 4WD, and 4WD = transmission loss and transmission loss = more fuel.
