'Tis always nice to see hte old-skool 'scorts on the go, being used how they were designed to be used. The RWD Escorts are one of the true legends of Rallying for me.

And as many 'Classic Ford' readers will testify, if you get a type-49 shell and bung a cosworth engine in there, you have an instant giant killing car once again! :-D

Yet you make no mention of the " Real" rally car in these pictures- The beautiful Lancia Stratos!!!!!!!! That was a real rally legend along with the Audi Quattro. Come on- a ford is a ford is a ford, no matter how you dress it up, only the Rs200 had any character and that was killed off when they did away with group c cars on its debut year.

Indeed... Each to their own! You say Lancia Stratos... I think "Italian rustbucket with ferocious driving manners!"

I say Mk1/2 Escort and you think.... "Doddery old Ford with ideas above it's station!"

We're a varied bunch, here at Club VR-4! :lolz:

I'm afraid I'm with Nick on this one. The Lancia Stratos is a beautiful piece of motoring history. ;)
Would love one. The kits aren't bad either - but V. expensive to put together with the correct components. :( :(

I love the Lancia Stratos, always wanted one :cool1:
Used to have a Lancia Montecarlo, real headturner ;) but that had to go, I could barely afford the insurance at the time (I was 20 then).

Had a Lancia Gamma after that. Nice car to look at and drive, but it cost me an absolute fortune to run and repair, had 2 engine rebuilds in 1 year. What was I thinking :rolleyes5 :rolleyes5

After that my VR4 is peanuts to run :D :D ;)

Hey Landy, our local garage had one of those in their workshop for about 3 years until he sold up last year. It came in for a rebuild and the owner ran out of money so it never got finished, Dave the garage owner put it to auction to recoup some money spent. Shame........... I often wonder where it ended up

Nice photos cars. I got a book on all the "Rally Cars" by Konemen [sic], but seeing them in the flesh would be great.

My list of Rally Cars would be

Ford Escort "Mexico" (Always a favorite with me)
Lancia Stratos (What a look)
Audi Quattro (4WD drive comes to Rally)
Subaru WRX (What an impact)
Lancer EVO (our 8G source)

and of course the some of the "Group B" ones

Audi Quattro Sport, Peugeot 205 Turbo 16, Porsche 959/961, Ford RS 200, Lancia Rally 037

You mention the 6r4 Ian, SVS our local jap garage has a renault 5 turbo that at first glance looks like a 6r4 metro. But it has the renault v6 in the back seat and is 4 wheel drive, turbo-ed with variable boost and a host of other goodies! Stock it was 250 bhp but they can nearly double that now, dont use it much for rallies but for hill climbs, Steve reckons even the f1 cars can't get near it at Goodwood!

Sounds more like a Renault 5 Turbo 2. This wasn't a V6, though - it was a 1.4 litre inline four (same basic block as Renault used in F1 in the turbo era), although it did use the gearbox from the Renault V6. About 160bhp in standard trim, but weighed less than a ton so was pretty rapid in its day. Renault have recently produced a mid-engined V6 Clio, but I'm not aware of them ever doing a V6 Renault 5.

No guys, sorry I think I've misled you- this is a one off built by the garage themselves. It definitely has a turbo v6 with some serious goodies on it , if I remember correctly ,steve said they took the engine from a renault25? And rebuilt/blueprinted it, balanced/lightened etc.
