hi, guys/gals

im not going to around for a while,

on thursday 20th at 3am my dad had a severe stroke,
he was rushed to hospital, he has survived,
but has lost feeling and movement down the left side of his body,
he is still very strong minded and can talk a bit,
still has his sense of humor,

so between work and staying with my dad (as much as the hospital will allow)
and supporting my mum, i wont have much time for anyhing else,

i will pop in from time to time,

Thanks
Carsten

hey Carston sorry to hear about that, your old man was such a hoot when I spoke to him that one time.

My old man had two strokes - one minor and one major - in succession just a week apart back in 1993 when I was 7 years old and he too is paralyzed down his left hand side, had slurred speech and was in a wheelchair for months after the stroke. It took about a year for his speech to come right again and he was able to gain some mobility back but his left side is still paralyzed. You'll find it's not just a physical disability but depending where the clot was in his brain it will affect things like logic and reasoning or even memory.

Again sorry to hear that mate, I hope your old man makes as good a recovery as he can but the first step in the recovery is understanding that life wont be the same as it was, as sad as it sounds.

really sorry to hear this, hope he makes a good recovery.

hope this gives you some sort of comfort that things might not look as bleak as the first seem.
my mother in law had a stroke and it affected the left hand side and couldn't speak or move left arm. but given enough time and care, she made a good recovery and has all movement and speech back. but does suffer from short term memory loss. It took about a year for her to get back to relative normality.

here is an insight that she give me from just after the stroke, when she couldn't speak, she could understand everything that was said around her but could not work out why she couldn't reply.
we did the one blink for yes and two blinks for no. In the first few weeks until the speech first started to come back. that really helped the frustration side of the loss of speech for her, she could still actually communicate.
we also did some requests on card like, "cup of tea", "toilet", etc, etc.

i don't know if this will help you, but i hope it does.

the body has a great way of healing itself given time and love.

thanks for the support everyone, its much appreciated,

he can still talk to some extent just a bit slow and slurred,
hes still his the same "hard case" guy, which is good,

i know he will never be the same psychically,
im just glad he's still here and seams to still have most of his marbles (he never had them all, lol)

ive just popped home to my house, left a hell of a mess behind,
clean up, empty the mail, and back to mum's

again, thank you for all the kind words.

Hope for a Full recovery mate ...
I know what your going through and it's not easy and you gotta be strong. He sounds stubborn enough to make a full recovery and be back to normal as soon as ..

Cheers
