Not only was Riaan awarded his wings but he also collected several prizes along the way:

The Air Command Floating Trophy, awarded to the student who obtained the highest percentage during the theoretical phase

He did really well! It`s like an Formula 1 trophy seasion for 1st, 2nd & third places all won by the same guy. I bet he was extremely chuffed!!

Does he get to keep them for good or is it just for that year?

The only wings I`ve ever got are these.....

Does the SAAF have any planes or do they just run around with their arms out?

Because they are "floating trophies", they are kept for one year, yes. He is quite chuffed - soon he will be attending 85 Combat Flying School for his jet conversion where he will remain for a couple of years flying the BAe Hawk Mk 120 before ultimately moving onto the SAAB JAS 39 Gripen C/D.
