View Full Version : it theory, could it be done?

i know anything can be done with enough money but i am basing this on stock parts rather than special engineered parts. so:

as the VR4 is 4WD, the parts exist to send power to the rear wheels. would it be possible to combine these parts with a FWD leggie to build a RWD conversion?
is so, what performance differences could you expect?

NB this is not something i am considering, it is purely curiousity as i am aware that FWD cars are limited by their issues with getting the power down whereas a RWD car can overcome these issues as the drive axle only has one job, getting the power down!

Would be easier to convert VR4 to rear wheel drive /yes

And yes anythings possible /yes

And there is already a RWD Legnum /yes

Wasn't there an issue with the drive shafts being tough enough to handle all the power..?

I'd be very surprised if that's true, given that there are Evo's out there (same driveshafts) running ridiculous bhp.

I assume the AYC system would take one look and poo it's pants, though.

In theory, it's a relatively simple conversion with the right parts.

That's probably what I was thinking, diff/AYC issues....

(ford 9", only way to go../lol )

There is nothing stopping you from taking any 4wd 8G, removing the front driveshafts and welding up the centre diff to make it rwd.

im talking about FWD -> RWD conversion Brad. i dont think anyone would convert 4WD -> RWD would they?

It is actually a lot more work as the 2wd chassis is quite different. The fuel tank sits in the middle of the car and the exhaust goes around to the passenger side. In a 4wd chassis the fuel tank is humped in the centre to allow the exhaust and driveshaft to go through the middle. The entire rear subframe is also completely different.

Trust me on this, you really want to use a 4wd 8G chassis to make a rwd 8G!

Agree with brad - easier to start with 4WD and remove.

To put things in perspective, the easiest way to convert the FWD into RWD is probably just to mount the engine in the boot and the fuel tank in the front.

And removing 4WD is very appealing - less transmission loss, a lot more fun, better controlability......4WD is quite a specialised tool.

The holy grail is lossless 4WD - electronic clutched diffs that engage and disengage depending on what the car needs.

I've been interested in a RWD conversion, but I do wonder what the advantage of RWD is. Fuel efficiency, torque/power, handling. What effect would it have?

Small amount of fuel efficiency and very small increase in power at the wheels.

more power at two wheels, or less power but at all four wheels. wouldn't it balance itself out in the end? I guess, once you're moving it would be advantageous.

In the dry a rwd one would be faster. In the wet the 4wd one would be faster through first gear and around corners.

Can you point me to the thread where someones actually done it? I'm trying to hunt it down on Google.

Not on here, but search for it on any evo forums. Your transfer case is slightly smaller than a VR-4/EVO but it is the same design as EVO 4-9.

this is a 7G from my home forum, if it helps http://www.msport.co.nz/viewtopic.php?t=1679&highlight=transfer+case

if i was considering a RWD conversion, id rather go the whole hog

2way lsd in the rear
north south mounted gearbox and motor

i get the 2way lsd part of this.. but the north south conversion in a vr4?? why?

okay you will save the weight of the transfer case and centre diff.. but create alot of problems for not much gain in power-weight outputs, if you wanted a competitive track car you wouldnt start with the 8G anyway..

i think the reason behind the rwd is just too have FUN and try some drift/skidding and over powering out of corners? and it would be alot of fun on the track aswell.. just not competitive against hondas and silvias.

just sayin...

anything is possilbe and if you want full time RWD, then this would be the ideal option...although not the cheapest.

i wouldnt mind having a rwd galant.

possible and legal are two different things but i understand what you mean in that saying..

i believe that my proposed option would be the ideal option because:

#you can get it certed easier as less items are changed
#less cost because of less labor and custom items made
#after your sick of having no traction or popping diffs you can replace the front CVs and have a very angry 50/50 4WD
#it been done and documented

after this summer of drag racing im going RWD in my 7G because alot of people use my 4wd as a reason as too why im successful in drag racing?? so its time for me too up the ante.
