hi ,

i have a 1997 vr4 tip,

when cruising around 40-50 mph i can hear a whine from the transmission, (kinda reminds of a bus's tranmission whine) if i lift of it immediately stops, the fluids where changed about six months ago otherwise i wud have put it down to needing an oil change.

any ideas?

Auto, I assume?

Is the sound accompanied by a vibration?

And do you know exactly what oil (and how much of it) was used for the change? I have assumed you're talking about the gearbox oil.

yes its auto (tip)

the previous owner changed the oil, he would be pretty fussy about things and would have done things by the book.

theres def no vibration at all

Is it different in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears?

What does the fluid look like? Dab some off of the dipstick onto some kitchen towel.

You're a naughty SGHOM!

And you only looked at this thread because it said 'wine', rather than 'whine'! /Elmo

Have you dropped the transfer case oil? If it looks very silvery then it will be the bearings in the transfer case going, which means new transfer case time.

no the whine is constant , changing gears has no effect on the whine,

the previous owner ran a set of 18 inch works rims on the car that were wider at the back, he said the ayc kept arsing about so he pulled the fuse, im wondering if this would have had an effect on the diff or transfer box?

i will check fluids when i get home.

Ok, so where on the transmission is it coming from? Engine end, or rear end?

If engine end, my money would be on the transfer box.

If it's the rear end, then I say it's the gear oil part of the rear diff. It is unlikely to be the AYC part, as I would only expect a noise when it is active.

What sizes were the tyres? Motorway journeys on mismatched tyres has kille a transfer box that I know of - I witnessed it's demise!

I would imagine the transfer case is the first place to look.

Do you know what the size the tyres were at each end?

this is the thing? the tire sizes where the same both end, 225 45 18 i think but still the ayc complained, if its the transfer box wat can i do?

If it is the transfer box, then the only sensible thing to do is swap it with a good one.
