Hi Chaps..

Thought id let you see what Ive bagged as my daily workhorse:

36271

36272

Its an Audi A8 4.0 Tdi with a nice lumpy v8 twin turbo.

Im very impressed. I sold my e60 530d to a workmate (who is now selling his 03 plate galant estate v6).

Its very strange, but i keep going for the indicators on the wrong side. It might remind my of my first vr4 with the auto box, odd!

Anyways, i can only recommend this thing for the money. Super smooth and fast enough (doesnt feel fast though). Lots of toys, everythings electric like the steering wheel and seatbelts.. plus it has a TV which is amazing.

Variety is the spice of life etc etc.. i only had the 530d for 6 months and it was superb, but you guys know how it goes /Banana

In town though, not sure what it actually is, but more like 20

Overall, its doing well

I'll also get in before Sir Steve of Supercharged - it needs a remap! :D

I've always liked the top-spec A8s - acres of spacious waftiness!

A8 is a massive car, just don't take it into any multi storeys :satan:

Uber wafting ability though.

It definitely needs a remap. These are surprisingly quick cars, though they do need to go on a bit of a diet :D

Indeed, what was the 530d like?

And how much nicer is the A8?

Is this the same car that Clarkson supposedly got 800miles from 1 tank of diesel ?

But I think it was the 4.0TDi they tested. And it had a trillion litre fuel tank or something?

Chap at work has an A6 3.0TDI. Peaks at 270bhp and 4000 meeelion torques - has a few choice modifications (remap, exhuast, intercooler).
He gets 25mpg absoloutely hooning it.
He gets 50mpg sitting at 70mph.
Perhaps more significantly he gets 45mpg sitting at 90mph.

Another chap has a 2.5TDI A4 estate with a remap.
198bhp and usually around 59mpg.

It's sooo hard to justify owning a petrol car these days :)

Hi Ritch

The e60 was superb, much better to drive on the back roads and it felt quicker (but isnt).

Id have another without a doubt, but the a8 is another level. Now im getting used to it, the size isnt such an issue now. Its a great machine.

Id highly recommend the 530d as a great all rounder... but you will need a warranty.

Hi Ritch

Id highly recommend the 530d as a great all rounder... but you will need a warranty.

that sounds ominous? what went wrong?

I've had the lancer gs4 for just over a year now with absolutely no issues other than filling with fuel and replacing some tyres! I think thats me made it into the Guinness book of world records for the longest time i have owned a car..... anyways a chap offered my a E60 525d M5 replica for my car but I didnt think it stacked up in my favour so declined. Has got me thinking about e60's tho.....

Incidentally mine has been remapped and feels super quick, it averaged at 55mpg on a 500 mile trip up to Forres last month, most of that was cruising at proper speed.

Nothing serious, the car was , and still is, under BMW warranty..

But it had a new oil cooler fitted, new glo plugs and a new particulate filter... all of which probably cost a pretty penny..

The BMW diesels are reliable enough, but when they go wrong, cost a fair bit to repair.

It was a 2004

To be fair, theyve fixed everything for me without issues...

Basically replacing anything that could have been repaired

E60's are dropping to about £10k for an early one.. Do look like great value..

E60/61s are great cars but the usual thing with turbos from 130K miles to watch out for I guess.. Apart from that they seem to be pretty good and thats before any chip tuning.

Top choice with the A8, such a great car inside and out. That engine must be so sweet too. WHats it sound like when you plant the throttle?

Axeboy
22-07-2010, 06:04 PM
Its quite muted, but sounds good...

Doesnt sound like a TD

Well, the audi has been chopped in.... and i now have a 335i saloon...

I'll never learn, must stop this financial suicide

bradc

Does the engine in the 335i feel just like a VR-4 with boost control?

Axeboy
18-12-2010, 10:55 AM
I havnt had a chance to really test it yet really, its too damn slippy :)

It feels similar so far, I wouldnt say it feels more powerful but it is reasonably refined and hard to tell. At speed it is more resposive and pulls away fine in 6th gear.

Axeboy

Bit of an update brad.

Having spent more time with the car it doesnt push you back in the seat like a boosted vr4 low down in the rev range, but has torque across the full rev range.

It pulls from 1000rpm no problem in any gear and revs to around 7000rpm while still feeling power. However, as its so torquey at all revs, you dont get the boost feeling which I kinda miss a bit really. I want lag :)

Great engine, very felixible... feels like a small v8 as intended.

bradc
02-01-2011, 08:44 PM
Thats cool. I guess compared to a VR-4 the extra 500cc helps the turbos come online a little bit earlier, while maintaining top end. Peak power is supposed to be at 5800rpm though which isn't much different from a VR-4 at 5500rpm.

Those things will chip tune to 360ish so easily... Not that you are interested tho :lipseal

Hate to sound like a stuck record...but....how does the economy stack up against the VR4?

Axeboy
12-01-2011, 10:35 PM
Average of 30mpg

I get 36mpg going from Edin to Glasgow and back including traffic/slow downs etc etc
