Measuring in gear times

You know the times magazines quote for cars like 2nd gear 40-60 mph in x secs, - what gadget do they use to do this?

Is this what the GTech and VBox do or are they restricted to just measuring 0-60, 0-100 and quarter mile times?

Wow, that looks serious!

Was looking at the Performance Box from Racelogic and it seems to be able to log times in increments. Price is 200 pounds onwards.

If a whole load of members chipped in, could buy one as a joint asset and share it around....
