Right where to start......

Whats the best way to wring a bit more power out of one of these.....cheapest way possible, ie for FREE!

First thoughts.

1: remove exhaust
2: Lighten by stripping interior

Car doesnt have to be roadworthy!

If it doesnt have to be road worthy how far are you prepared to strip it? can lights etc all be removed?

1. Remove trim, seats, belts, heater matrix, stereo equipment, carpet, sound deadening etc then start drilling, cutting and filing bits of the exterior and interior bodywork away.

2. Put some steel wheels on in place of the alloys, alot of the time they weigh bugger all compared to alloy wheels and will reduce the unsprung mass.

3. Go on a diet.

lights can be removed bar two brake lights are necessary.

anyone got any steel wheels they dont want, preferably with tyres. Condition not important!!

Is this for track use or drag use as they differ in requirements

ok well you can cut a lot of metal away in none stress areas to save wait , remove the fuel tank and use a smaller one , most of the loom can go only leave enough to start the car etc .

do a DBA on the doors and remove all glass bar the windscreen , recon you would could remove 300kg's for one but I'd woprry about the safety aspect :D

or just dont crash

Lose the factory exhaust for a bit of straight through pipe - keep the manifolds.

How far do you want to go?

Front crash bar can go....
All the glass can go (replace with polythene sheeting).

Then you're into the smaller stuff - removing bolts and replacing with zip-ties.

You could trade the battery for a smaller / lighter one?
Screen wash bottle - bye bye.
As john says, fuel tank needs to go, replace with a smaller bottle.

arch liners...gone.
All the emissions stuff in the engine bay....delete.
Get rid of the boot floor, replace with some hefty bar stock across the shock turrets.

If you're fitting a cage, you can go MEGA silly.

Most of the bootlid can be removed, and just leave the skin. Or you could replace it completely with something shonky made out of plastic sheets and gaffer tape.

Do you need power steering? Delete the pump and pipework.
Aircon pump - delete.

Track down an alternator from a Colt or something small and bodge that in to reduce the weight. Fit a switch inline to disconnect it when at WOT - reduces the turning resistance, improves full bore acceleration.

One of the rad fans can probably go (if it has two). As can anything remotely to do with the aircon.

ABS system can go with a bit of plumbing.
As can the brake servo (which is weight AND uses engine power).

In extreme cases, I've seen an angle grinder taken to various suspension components to shave weight. I think you have to be pretty brave to go that far.

MLR500?

Just rip everything out (Keep rev counter/warning lights) service it and make sure the tyres have a decent amount of tread. :D

yup!!

Its got to last 4hours approx, so cooling and breathing is the issue. Looking to wire the fans on constantly etc etc etc. It should be competetive once the weights down!
