Hi folks,

I've had a look and can't see where to get a cable to run evoscan (program from http://www.limitless.co.nz/EvoScan/). I've also read the 7202 & 7203's ecu's can be flashed. How do you know what's in your car? I've a 1998 facelift manual.

Cheers for the help.

Paul

These VAG Com cable will work for data logging but need to be modded (connecting pin 1 and 4 )

However AFAIK they wont do the flashing bit etc.

That cable on Amazon is incorrect, however it can be modified to be partially suited to the VR-4.

Typically you'll need to add a pin by doing the following;

Open up the VAG-COM cable
Drill a tiny hole where Pin 1 would be
Cut a paperclip or safety pin to suit
Solder it in
Bridge it to Pin 4 with a wire or whatever
Once you've done that, you'll be able to communicate with the EFI (engine) ECU only, you should be able to log the engine parameters such as engine knock, AFR estimation, fuel trim, read / clear engine diagnostic / fault codes etc. It will NOT work with the AYC, ABS, or any other subsequent ECU.

You can buy Limitless (OpenPort) cables in the UK here;

OpenPort 1.3U¹ (faster, logs AYC and ABS) for £87 Incl. VAT (http://www.gb-ent.com/store/electronics/ecu-mapping-tools/limitless-1.3u-cable-for-mitsubishi-evo-%28up-to-evo-ix%29.html)
OpenPort 2.0² (Allows you to reflash 7202/3 ECUs) for £175 Incl. VAT (http://www.gb-ent.com/store/electronics/ecu-mapping-tools/openport-2.0-with-adapter-set.html)

¹ If you order the 1.3U make sure you ask for the model with Pin 9 removed as it interferes with other ECUs
² It's unknown at this point if the OpenPort 2.0 will let you log the AYC / ABS systems, I'm awaiting TAR to do a test with the 2.0 he's borrowed from Nutter_John.

I have a modified VAG cable (thanks wintertidenz) and use it solely for datalogging purposes with EvoScan and it works fine :)

Yup, the modified VAG-COM cables work fine. Once you get it, just open it up (four screws) and make sure it is the FTDI chipset first of all (or ask the seller).
Once you have confirmed the chip is correct, solder a small wire from pin 1 to pin 4 and remove pin 9 (or ask someone who's good with a soldering iron to do it).

Chuck away the CD that comes with it too, they are useless - Evoscan uses its own OpenPort 1.3 driver as the 1.3 also uses the FTDI chipset.

Oh, and from what I've seen these cables also work with ABS and AYC too, but I still have to test AYC/ABS actuation with it. It did open up the stats for the AYC after pin 9 was removed, which is a good start.

Just as an aside, I also used my modified VAG cable to do some logging on my friend's 2002 BH5 Subaru Legacy using ECU Checker and it worked brilliantly /yes

I paid about $195 for my openport 2.0 cable which included the extra reflash connector you will need.

I think i bought it direct from tactrix, but there is not much in it.

If you want to check some error codes or just do some logging with evoscan you can borrow my cable karl.

Apparently you can't buy them from gb-ent anymore, you can only get them direct from Tactrix.

There seem to be plenty of sellers on the web that have the openport 2.0 for sale, but there prices seem a bit high than direct from tactrix so they are probably just reselling the cable for a small profit.

i halt it when there is online payment issue, you are never quite sure if it has gone through or not or if you card details have been copied.

don't worry about it Karl i am sure it will be fine, leave it for a bit and try again.
