Well i think one of the turbo oil seals on our vr4 is on it way out so i was thinking of upgrading them to a pair of T3 turbos. How do these stats stand up to the standard td03's?

.42 A/R compressor with 42.5mm minor diameter wheel..
.48 A/R V-band exhaust housing with 49mm minor diameter wheel.
T3 inlet flange
V-band exit flange
oil feed M12*1.5+2*M8*1.25
oil drain 2*M8*1.25
water in/out M14*1.5

They cost the same as a rebuilt turbo and i'd need to use custom manifolds, dump pipes, oil and water lines.

Pair of T3s perform almost the same as TD04s but spool slower

T3's are ancient sh1tty turbos.

2 x TD04L from a post 00 WRX seem like the best choice to me if you want new twins.

yea i would get some td04l's but the price for them as second hand turbos are bloody high and thats with no warrenty on them. i asked a queation on trade me about a replacement pair of turbos and this was the reply

Hi,there are no bolt on upgrades for your vr4.I have talked to a business college about your engine and he has seen dyno sheets on this engine. He testing indicates a very poor air flow through the heads when high boost or turbo mods have been done.Best money spent to gain hp would be to high flow the heads in my opinion.

Rubbish, that guy is an idiot.

Quite a few people now with stock heads are above 500hp.

I quite agree with brad.

yea just another person on trade me who doesn't really know what they are talking about. I'm still really keen on the T3s due to price and availability plus they may be old and ****ty but people say that about the T88's and you still find them on supras making good power

don't want to thread hijack, but.....

"quite a few",

how many do we know of, putting out over 500bhp?.

I can think of:
1. Ilya. recently made 500bhp ish)
2. Zentac, ????
3. Valmes (well his car is with a new owner and noght be putting out over 500bhp)
4. KEV (the guy with the forged internals, but the car didn't run for long and he had probs, don't know if it ever ran again?)
5. Mante (not sure if he made 500bhp ????)

poss 1 in NZ and 1 in Aus?v(munta ???, silicon angel, or someone who has been to rpw)
All of the above would be a few, granted, but I am guessing here, are they all up and running over 500bhp?, did I miss any, many, ??

Not meaning this post as a dig, I am interested in how many are hitting those figures, and who is doing it with forged bits and who is on standard internals, any info appreciated.

(MODS feel free to move this to a new thread or area!)

There was Madhav in Aussie with two KKR280's and another one is being built at the moment with two GT2554R's.

So that makes about 7 which I reckon is quite a few. I beleive Zentac has modified heads but he may have got to 500hp without touching them, I can't remember.

I think all of those people are on stock internals apart from Zentac, but then he has well over 500hp now.

And to prove my point, I only need to cite a single example. The guy on trademe makes it sound like turbos are not the thing to sell at all to a VR-4 owner at all and that instead should be focusing on the heads to make extra power, which is complete BS.

T88s are old but not ****ty. A T28/T3 wouldn't stand ground in comparison to the TD04/TD05 series from mitsubishi in Spool and Power. Might as well go for two used Evo 3 turbos and bolt on since those will spool up quicker than the T3 and make loads more power. They would need about the same amount of work done to fit (4 bolt flange)

I made

515bhp and 450lb/ft torque at the flywheel with ported heads.
547bhp and 470lb/ft torque at the wheels with cams (estimated at 612bhp and 527lb/ft at the flywheel)
560bhp and 485lb/ft torque at the wheels with uprated valve springs. (estimated at 630bhp and 545lb/ft at the flywheel)

all at around 1.8 bar.

/Hijack
That will be the TD04-13T (49377-04300 14412AA151)
I know a good deal for 2xTD04-13T from earlier impreza (98 model) with turbo number (14412AA140 49377-04100)
These have straight entry as the post 00 wrx turbos, but does anyone know if these are the same as post 00 wrx turbos?

Don't know if it helps, but I've pulled apart both a 49377-04100, and a 49377-04200. The inducer and exducer inner/outer dimensions all measured the same, and all matched up to values I got from 2 (I crossed checked :P) websites for a TD04-13T. I'm suspecting the first part is the turbo code, and the second is something to do with year.

Thought it may have originally been forester/wrx differences, but they both had 'W' marked on the wastegate, and turbo's are the same.

Aaaand now I'm stuck halfway through making manifolds on account of being a lazy/busy @*!t.

Thanks, then it is as I suspected :) When searching a turbo site I found that the 04100 was changed to 04200 and later to 04300, but they should all be compatible

aren't they what the GTO's use as well

Anyone looked at fitting GTO manifolds? (just an idea!)

GTO manifold won't be easy unfortunately.
