Following some discussion about suitable cars for new drivers, what was your first car you owned?

Mine?

1965 Triumph Herald 1200 Convertible, (cost £90),

.... and held the Tryarnon Bay Holiday Camp record for the most people in a car. We got 22 in - on the day before I found my chassis outrigger broken:whistle: But then I wasn't young & irresponsible .... much.

Datsun 120Y 3spd auto. 0-60 in 21.6 sec. I loved it. It was turquiose. It gave me freedom & was a hit with the ladies, not. I still remember the reg: HND 564N which is amazing as I can't remember any reg since.

I bought it for £140 - never spent a penny on it (aside from petrol) & ran it for 3 yrs.

I was impressed with Jap reliabilty, which was brought home by my next car - jReg mini 850cc (that's a 1970's J, not a 90's J) - which was not reliable at all but was a hit with the ladies. As cars go that was the best I've had - it possessed personality & charisma by the bucket load.

Edit:
It looked pretty much like this one

1983 1300cc Vauxhall Cavalier Mk2 Hatchback in Beige. I got my 1st Loan from the TSB for 2 Grand and went to the auction.
Purchased at auction for £1775. Insurance was £225 TPF&T. Cost and insurance totalled exactly 2 Grand :D
Remember doing my 1st oil change on that car /yes
After letting most the all drain out, i thought it would be a good idea to crank it over for a few seconds to see if i could get some more oil out! Well it fired up and fired out /Help Oil all over the underside of the car(my 1st underseal :) ) and all over the road 10yds behind the car :D

Datsun 120Y Coupe. Red with random rust. Crashed it into the local college car park fence after 2 days of ownership. Had a new front end fitted by a local bodyshop who happened to have a scrapper that had been rear ended. Problem is it was blue so I ended up with a "United Colours of Benneton" 120Y.

About 3 weeks later - T-boned a young lad in a Mini in the pouring rain. Turned out the poor lads dad owned a local bodyshop that happend to have a blue scrap 120Y that had been rear ended - need I go any further. Happy days!

A 1985 VW Jetta 1.6 Driver, It had the GTi arch mouldings with stock steel wheels. I fitted GTi seats to it and removed the tow bar that came with it, I reckon it gained me a full 10 seconds to 60 LOL
Was impressed to get insurance for £400ish at the time too.

N reg Citroen ZX 1.9 Elation diseasel. Many reckless miles covered, much air and understeer powerslides! Oh and I managed to get 1 set of brake pads to set themselves on fire chasing a guy with a massive beard in a ratty old Renault 5, on the B974 Cairn o' Mount road. Oh to be 17 again! Finally laid to rest after being rear ended by a Volvo xc90 in the snow.

Californian import Jeep Wrangler, with lift kit & massive wheels, 4.23 ltr engine instead of the standard 4.0 & the best part, was a hard & soft kits with interchangable doors, removable roof & a fold down windscreen. Cool car (other than the fact it was metallic brown:rolleyes4 )

1978 VW Type 2 Devon conversion 1998cc with twin choke webber idf40 carbs. Brought for £2,000 of a guy in a car park in Reading turned out (surprisingly) to be an absolute lemon but she was my pride and joy and cost me well over £10,000 to restore to the condition i sold her in for £8,000 five years later. she had a bare metal respray and was striaght as a die sadly the last time i saw her someone had hand painted flowers all over her. i was going to leave a note but it was their bus not mine by then but was still feeling a little bitter!

Edit: Only one Bucket Dave??? Surely not!!!!!

My 1st car was a B reg 1.1 cross flow Escort estate. I never payed for it as I served my time with my Uncle & the car was a company car.

The 1st car I payed for was a 2.0 Vauxhall Cavalier Mk2 auto. I paid £200 for it & it lasted 1 night. Had it full with a few friends got it up to 80mph & the gear box went.(sounds familiar:) )

Sat out side my folks house on 6" blocks for about 6 months till I had to get rid of it.

My first car was a red 1978 Leyland Mini 1000 with a top speed of 95km/h and that was screaming its head off!

It didn't last long unfortunately before a cracked cylinder ended its brief career as Ryan's rally car.

I like those sd1's :)

Went to a local race circuit in Wales some years ago (pembrey) and watched those sd1 vitesse with a tuned up 3.5 v8 engine race! Wow the noise and to this day I still remember the sound of thunder as it was going round the track.

There was metro 6r4's there and nothing could catch this rover on the straight!

Mine was a Hillman Avenger 1.3DL in silver with a black vinyl roof. PDL 452M bought for £50 with MOT & TAX.

You could`nt fill it up because it leaked really badly, it also had no heater because that leaked.

Only positive thing that happened was I part exchanged it for a 2.0ltr GXL Mk3 Cortina which was its double in Life on Mars :unbeleeva

mine was a 1987 Mitsubishi Sigma GSR-X, a NZ new model which had actually been brought in from Japan already assembled. Was sold new to my father who had it as a company car for a while and then he bought it for himself off the company in the early 90s, then a year or two later he suffered a stroke which meant he couldn't drive again, so it didn't get driven much over the next 10 years and during that time Dad couldn't bare to sell it, especially to some other geezer, and after months and months of hounding I purchased the car off Dad when I was 16.

Best thing about it is that it had the Sirius DASH 3x2 engine fitted to it, and it was in the rare Black Onyx over Silver two tone colour combination. Was a great car for nine months until it got written off... not by me though, a drunk driver slammed into me. At this stage I was just about to go to Uni, so I took the insurance payout which paid for my first year's Uni tuition and I bought a cheap crapper 6G Galant which had done 320k when I picked it up and 3 years later when I was nearly done with Uni I sold it with 410k.

Ahh I wish I had pictures of the Sigma, I miss it dearly and would give the world to get it or another one back.

My first car was a 1 litre Mini Mayfare, mainly blue with black hammerite hand painted roof and skirting...... It handled very very well in fact it's only second to the Legnum so far, better than the Civic and Punto that followed anyway........ It lasted maybe a year and I still feel very sentimental when I see a mini, in fact if I had the time and money I would happily buy another Old Skool Mini and sort it out properly....... She later passed away following a very quick left hand turn into a petrol station, all was well in my nice sideways slide until I found a raised central bollard, the damage was almost nothing, changed a damaged wheel/tyre and drove home, unfortunately she never started again.

I returned home from college to find she had been taken by the local scrappy, I didnt even get chance to say good bye..........
