speedo and gearchange problem

can anybody help please. have a 2002 auto vr4 and speedo suddenly went off and wont change gear. can select p r n d but no tip. or change in drive. anybody had the same?

If it doesn't drive at all regardless of whether you are in drive or reverse then I would guess the torque converter splines have broken or that the output shaft from the gearbox has broken.

When you rev it now in drive does the speedo go up, or nothing at all?

Surely more likely to be a failed speedo converter?

If so, then it is likely that the converter is located at the gearbox, probably a little black box with 4 wires or so coming out of it. Check all the connections first to see if they are sound. The best way of checking the convertor (in the absence of a replacement unit) you can just remove it entirely and reconnect the original wires.

If that works, then the gearbox should change normally and your speedo should work, albeit in kmh instead.

If he can't change gear at all I wouldn't have thought so, surely a speedo converter would only cause speedo problems, not drive problems!
