Traveling up to Nelson this weekend. 98octane for the trip up, 95octane back down. Thought it'd be a good time to try some octane booster. Any suggestions on a brand that stands out from the rest?

Personally, I'd just 95 - the car will run fine but simply switch to the low octane fuel map.

Dale is driving his green civic up there.. so I'm not sure if it has a low octane fuel map.

lets's put it this way. 98 = 1/2 tank up. 95 = 1 tank back. Want to try something to combat this.

Use 95 up as well?

Not all BPs have 98. For example, the one on marshlands road in chch does not have 98, and any further out from the city center don't seem to have it either.

Nope. I don't understand it as the fuel tanks at Nelson port are a similar sizing to the ones in Lyttleton, of course I have no idea what they contain but still. It's weird as far as I know Blenhiem, Westport and Christchurch all have 98, but Nelson misses out for some reason

mobile 98, or gull e10?

moth balls. (mythbusters proven)

octane booster doesn't really work,

from what Ive read it doesn't increase the octane level,
gas is so full of additives already,

if it was a case of just adding a few more chemicals im sure that it would already be in there
and we would be getting ripped even more

what octane booster does, is dampen or alter the sound of knocking,
tricking the ecu into thinking it has the good stuff in it. and not retarding the ignition as it normally would.

There's no Gull stations down here, as far as I know.

Nope BP or nothing as far as 98 is concerned.

Ohhh /Hmmm I still see no reason why it can't use 95? The same cars run in inland South Africa on 95 with no problems. *shrugs* Just looked at the compression ratio for the B16 and it's 10.4:1 or there abouts, so quite high.

Running 95 won't harm it as it will no doubt pull timing anyway if you try and trash it.

B16 pmsl. that's funny hahah. Only a D15 here. I know it runs 95 fine it just chews up a crap load more fuel which is what I was hoping to combat

I have used Miller's Octane Booster in the past (in non-cat equipped cars).

Not sure if it's available in NZ.

Ive tried wynnes octane booster. ****ty to say the least!

You could always huss it across to Blenheim to fill up?

Altho I do see a flaw in your maths.

1/2 a tank up? so In theory 1/2 a tank should get you back. So in total 1.0 tanks of gas used.

Just fill up before leaving?

Yeah but Green machine chews up a bit of fuel on anything other than long distances and I do a bit of to-ing and fro-ing while I'm up their that kills what's left in the tank.

PROBLEM SOLVED:

When you get up there, siphon the remaining half tank out and store that until you head home, using 95 while you're up there.

if you think octane is the problem.. get water injection. will turn 91 into 101. octane is not the problem.
