I've made a start on installing the car PC that I bought from Matt (Orionn20). I always like to do things as neatly as possible so I need to splice and extend some cables.

All are quite simple except the monitor lead. At one end it is heavily shielded and screened but at the other end it is just a simple open plug except for one wire which is screened.

How should I go about extending this cable ?

ill presume its a vga at one end, what about buying a vga extender cable??

I need to lengthen it because the vga plug is too close to the screen and will be on show. Don't want that.

not sure im following (maybe im being thick! lol) so when the vga plugs into the screen you can see the vga plug?

No Mate, the screen is an open frame module designed for building into the dash. Therefore the connection leads are quite short and there are 3 of them, VGS, USB and power.

The screen will live in the glove box most of the time but will be mounted to the dash for satnav/logging/mappimg etc.

If I don't extend the wires then all 3 connectors will be visible and I do not want that. I want to make just 1 cable going from the screen back into the glovebox. I know it seems a lot of work just to tidy up some wires but I just hate things like that and want it as tidy as I can get it.

In the pictures above it is the little white connector that plugs into the pcb inside the screen. VGA connector is then for an extension cable back to the PC.

ahhh i see now!!

well i would say cut the white plug off and then solder wire of similar quality to the wires then solder the white plug back on, then wrap in insulation tape.

obviously cut 2" back from the plug to allow for re-soldering.

Yea, that's pretty much what I was thinking but not sure how to tackle the screened wire. Someone will be along to explain befor much longer.

Why would a VGA extension cable not work?

I suspect the easiest way is to buy a thin VGA cable (long). Chop one end off and connect it to the JST (I think it is a JST connector) connector.

Job done

Next question. What are people using for Satnav and safety camera monitoring ? Links to free/cheap stuff would be much appreciated.

Centrafuse I think is the daddy for ICPC, it what I will be running on mine.
