Im looking to get an OBDII reader for the Galant but so far found the technology quite confusing. There seems to be variants of the OBDII tech either standard OBDII or EOBDII.

Im looking at this one at the moment (EBAY (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MITSUBISHI-Diagnostic-Scanner-Tool-OBD2-OBDII-Diagnose-/310231051887?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item483b362e6f#ht_2837wt_905)) but just wanted to check if the Galant has the 12 pin rectangular diagnostic socket, 12 pin +16 pin diagnostic socket or 16 pin OBD2 diagnostic socket?

Any ideas?

You will need JOBD standard.
OBD stans for pin-out and socket shape, but not for protocol. You must ensure that particular device is communicating in Mitsu protocole (i.e. MUT's or Openport).
Most of so-called universal devices are pretty much useless.

Thanks mate!

Had a quick search in Google for a JOBD Mitusbishi Scanner and didn't find anything. Is that what i need to search for or am i looking for the MUT protocol? If you could maybe point me in the right direction where i can get one i would appreciate it! I always have doubts about buying from ebay....

What are you wanting to achieve?

Really just want to fault find should the occasion ever occur as it can be expensive having it done at a garage, and i also have a few mates with Mitsubis's as well so i can lend it out for a small free :afro:

I am planning on a win7 based car PC with an OBD2 interface so i can access it all from that but i mobile scanner is something I've always wanted. Bit of a gadget geek as well to be perfectly honest!

The error codes are obtainable using nothing more than a paperclip or short piece of wire, and shorting pins 1 & 4. That gives you the flashy dash and the stored error codes in the various ECUs.

I know but its much cooler to have a scanner tool! I just like gadgets:dance:

Looks good but cant see my car on this list for supported engines, but then it does say :

"ALL Mitsubishi Vehicles with a 16pin OBDII connector, all Mitsubishis from 1994 onwards have one of these. "

"JDM / AU / USA / EU
1994-2010 Mitsubishi
OBDII / MUTII / MUTIII

Galant DE / ES / Ralliart
Galant SE / GTS / GTZ / LS"

Supported Mitsubishi Engine Models:

1.6L 4G18
2.0L DOHC (4G63)
2.0L DOHC MIVEC (4B11)
2.0L DOHC MIVEC (4G63)
2.0L DOHC TC/IC MIVEC (4B11)
2.0L DOHC Turbo (4G63)
2.0L SOHC (4G64)
2.0L SOHC (4G94)
2.4L (4G64)
2.4L DOHC MIVEC (4B12)
2.4L SOHC (4G64)
2.4L SOHC (4G69)
2.4L SOHC MIVEC (4G69)
3.0L (6G72)
3.0L MIVEC (6B31)
3.0L SOHC (6G72)
3.5L SOHC (6G74)
3.5L SOHC (6G74) (MMAL)
3.7L SOHC (EKG) (Chrysler)
3.7L SOHC (EKG) (DCX)
3.8L SOHC (6G75)
3.8L SOHC MIVEC (6G75)
4.7L SOHC (EVA) (DCX)
4.7L SOHC (EVA) (DCX) Cal
4.7L SOHC (EVD) (DCX) Fed

That contradicts itself because apparently all models from 1994 have the OBD2 port but then my engine isnt in that list. Its the 2.5L V6 (6A13???)

What you need is EvoScan, one of these (http://uk.dynamism.com/notebooks/viliv-n5.shtml) and either one of these (http://www.gb-ent.com/store/electronics/ecu-mapping-tools/limitless-1.3u-cable-for-mitsubishi-evo-(up-to-evo-ix).html) or one of these (http://www.gb-ent.com/store/electronics/ecu-mapping-tools/openport-2.0-with-adapter-set.html)

Theres your gadget fix! /Devil5

Yeah I have had it working with my v2.0 cable , just need to select MUTII and it reads it fine

Ha-ha that's more like it. Sadly at the moment a fair bit over my budget. This is actually going to be my birthday present from the folks for my 22nd as I can't think of anything I want! So looking more like £120 roughly.

So I'm confused if those EvoScans will work because although it says all Mitsubishi's from 1996 have the OBDII socket it doesn't list my engine so I assume its a different protocol?

I assume you have a UK spec 2.5 v6 galant made after 1996 , if so then it will work fine .

You don't need to go all the way and buy the OP2.0 cable to read stats from the ecu you can use a £10 vagcom one ( but you may not be able to read error codes )

foxdie

EvoScan is tailored more towards MUT-II / MUT-III, but it will also fall back and support more standard OBD-II protocols and support the non-VR-4 models.

Yeah its a UK spec 2.5 v6 sport. (haven't got it yet though!). So does MUTII only apply to the VR4 models?

In the end I want to have all this information displayed on the car pc but I would also like a hand held scanner. Not to fussed about getting it running on a mobile pc.

Would something like this work OK? I've decided since I'll be putting in a Car-PC I may as well integrate it with that.

Can someone actually confirm that my car is OBDII (EOBD) compatible?

foxdie
17-10-2010, 04:55 PM
What is your car? You havent actually specified it in any of your forums posts to date :)

Did you get a V6 Sport in the end? If so, then a generic VAG-COM cable will do, but you will need to short/bridge pin 1 and pin 4 together.

When you've done that, any software that supports the ISO 9141-2 OBD-II protocol should work.

I did mention a few posts up that's it's a 2001 Galant 2.5 V6 Sport. So I need a VAG-COM cable to use something like OBDLink? Does that cable go between the OBD port on the car and the OBDLink device?

foxdie

A VAG-COM cable typically has an OBD-II connector on one end, and either a USB or RS232 (aka Serial) Plug on the other, it connects directly to your laptop, not to a third party monitoring device.

Something like this you mean?
http://www.kds-online.com/Grafiken/OBD/30061_OBDLink_USB/30061_OBDLink_USB_0480x0360_01.jpg
That claims to work on all European protocols for around $180. includes software as well.

get yourself a copy of evoscan for $25 and a £10 vagcom cable from ebay , connect pin one to four and you can read all the error codes from the ecu on a laptop

can you set the error codes with it

Nutter_John

set ?

do you mean See or reset , yes you can reset error codes with EvoScan , but I have not tested reseting with a vagcom cable

Could anyone tell me where i can find the port for this? Finally got myself a bluetooth scanner but cant seem to find the socket in the car. I looked around under the driver side dash where the fuse box is but dont see anything.

Spot on :)

Sadly my cheapo adaptor didnt seem to work. Tried in my mates Evo X and it works perfectly....BOOO!

Someone here mentioned shorting pin 1 - 4....any idea how that's possible when you plug the adaptor on?

Nick Mann

Don't use the adapter. Just a bent paperclip.

Or just fit a switch to pin 1 wire that comes from the back of the connector which shorts it to chassis so whenever you want to read the codes. Just flick the switch. Very useful.
