I've done my sums ... It would appear we don't need to earn much any more ... so long as we sell our house and live outside Auckland.

We can virtually live off the interest and returns off our investments and still put a minimum of $100 per month into Kiwisaver each to guarantee the free $30,000 from the government.

We have investments falling due at the end of this year, in 5 years time, 10 years time and KiwiSaver in about 15 years time. Which should boost our funds nicely.

Woot ... Woot ... Woot ... retirement before 50. :D

PS: Re-considering my decision not to get a 635 CSi (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Cars/BMW/auction-315022299.htm) ... just not sure ... the VR-4 is great too ;)

Hi Richard - what free $30 000 from the government are you talking about exactly?

If you place a minimum of $1040 per year into Kiwsaver the government will match it. i.e. 15 years x 2 (me and the wife) x $1000 = $30,000

Do you have to be in NZ? Sounds like a good deal...

Resignation emailed today. To my boss and his boss.
Dear xxx,

I am writing to inform you that I will be leaving my position as IT xxxx xxxx with xxxx xxxx Limited, making my last day November 12, 2010. We will be relocating out of the Auckland area in the near future, and we need time to establish in a new location.

I have appreciated both being part of the xxxx team and the opportunities that have been provided to me during the last couple years.

Please let me know if I can be of assistance during the transition.

Yours Sincerely

.... The deed is done !

Does it feel liberating at all?

KiwiTT

More like relief.

However, I will now have to manage our finances well.

Wow now thats fantastic.

This is what i'm kind of hoping for myself in a few years, hence why I'm squirreling away money in whatever investment account I can!

Well done Richard, I can think of nothing better than retirement, I just have a few hundred years to go yet... bloody horses.

I am now having a a full week off this week (time in lieu - don't get it paid out if you leave), so I will get to see how it feels like before it actually happens.

Will use the time to explore the south a bit more. Plan to find a place to rent at first and then sell our place and then look for a new place.

PS: I have switched off my cellphone, so the company can get used to the fact of me being no longer available all the time 24/7 ... :)

PPS: Actually being on-call 24/7 for approximately 20+ years, is like working 40+ years.

Congrates mate, enjoy it while you can =)

What did you do for a crust?

I was in IT and reached Manager a couple times.

Actually, I have seen a trend. Corporate IT as we know it is ending; it's becoming too complex for the average small / medium NZ business to look after it's own servers and infrastructure. They are moving more and more of it into the cloud. The future is really for high specialised engineers looking after the servers, networks and applications.

This is one of the reasons I have decided to stop. I am an IT generalist, and found myself calling on IT specialists more and more. While I understand the technology, the complication of VoIP, Video Conferencing, Firewalls, Networks, VPNs, Anti-Virus, Servers, Branch Servers, etc. was just getting too much for just me. I much prefer to help the PC user get connected and working, then do all of the above.

Congrats Richard ! Any plans to maybe do some IT related side line to keep your mind active etc........maybe a small business fixing them or something ?

KiwiTT

Yeah ... I am considering that ... the odd part-time job fixing people's home computers ... my first focus of the next 3-6 months is get us setup in an area we are happy to live in ... settle in, get our accounts in order with long-term deposits, share funds etc.

When I resigned my manager resigned two weeks after I left.

It looks like they are wanting me back for a contract to help them consolidate the servers.

I'm enjoying retirement so much so they will have to make it worthwhile to consider changing our plans.

Well after being on "Holiday" for the last few weeks, I have now decided to "apply" for some volunteer work to keep me busy.

You know there is no such thing as retirement....I would imagine your list of "to do"" is impressive. Good effort, enjoy "retirement"", make the most of it. Cheers

Well ... this is due an update. Did not end up going to Napier (Just yet). Did Citizen Advice work for the last year or so and then late last year applied for a Saturday job, showing rental properties. This expanded this year to working Tuesdays and Thursdays. Now looks like it is changing again to working four days a week (about 20+ hours). I suppose that ends my retirement.

More proceeds for the "Improve the VR4 Fund". :D

KiwiTT
12-06-2012, 06:40 AM
More like more proceeds to keep it running, with petrol costs being what it is now. ;)

However, less excuse to ever consider letting it go now. I know if I let it go one day it will be probably be one of the saddest day of my life so far.
