You seriously need to get someone else to do this for you. That is the SRS clock spring. It is what allows the drivers airbag to work. If you cock it up then you will have no airbag. Potentially worse, the airbag will deploy unexpectedly. Contact someone local to you who is well known on here.

huh?? the airbag is on the floor in the passenger footwell?? if it deploys from there ill be well impressed!! and will get pics to prove! :D

nah nah, im fitting a chavvy aftermarket wheel, with no airbag.

sorry dude, should have explained a bit more in the first post!

Mark is correct it is the clock spring , disconnect it and remove it , and you should be ok , also suggest you disco the passenger airbag just in case

Pugme
08-11-2010, 09:20 PM
battery is disconnected, that should be enough

from that pic, how do i remove it?? just pull it out?

Nutter_John
08-11-2010, 09:22 PM
IIRC you need to remove the cowling as it is hel on underneath the unit

Davezj

that black bit that revolves is part of the clock spring and there are 4 screws around the fixed black bit and if you undo these it will remove the entier thing easily. but you need to take the cowl off top and bottom.

the function of the clock spring is to transfer the electrial signals from the steering column to the steering wheel itself for the air bag deploment and for the horn.

If you are not using a horn or air bag the the clock sping is not necessary. however a horn is required for and MOT.

nice, how would you go about hiding the foam? between the boss and the cowling?

Pugme
08-11-2010, 10:35 PM
its not foam, i have no idea what its made off but its solid, its not as grey as it looks in the picture, i think thats the flash doing that, if you compare the colour of the wheel between the 2 pics, that piece is much darker.

c0xxy
08-11-2010, 10:45 PM
is it part of the boss or the car?

Have you had to put a resistor in the loom or has the SRS light not come on. One other thing I've wondered, seen people change their wheels, but are air bags not compulsory on cars that were fitted with them at manufacture?

Pugme
09-11-2010, 07:25 PM
not sure about the dash lights as i didnt start it up and a for legality, i have no idea but i doubt it would cause a problem at mot time

pitslayer

The Vee, Airbags were compulsory after 1995 on all cars, so it would have to be refitted and made sure it is working for the mot.

Whilst it is your car, that is a dreadful thing to do to a COTY :( (imho)

elnevio

on all cars

Got a link to the relevant authority?

If so, I guess I'll have to get an airbag fitted to the Swift of Justice, seeing as it didn't have one from the manufacturer.

I'll have to get an airbag fitted to the Swift of Justice
Ditto the Evo, which doesn't have one until much....MUCH later than 1995 - too heavy.

Pugme, I like the wheel a lot. I'm just not sure I'd like to smash it into my chest at 100mph. Do you really hate the wood that much?
Does the Boss it was supplied with have crush points in it's structure?

Pugme
01-12-2010, 08:28 PM
yeah its a legit omp one, but after getting it fitted, i drove down the road and the AYC **** its pants!! lol

basically that round thingy i took out is something to do with this! lol so for now the wood is back o, my plan is to notch the back of the boss out (dont worry nothing structual its just the magnetic plate on the rear which would be for the horn) so when the boss turns it will turn the black plastic thingy majicy!!

in all fairness thinking about headbutting the wheel is the last thing on my mind! so im no, im not particularly fussed about an airbag.

"If you have an accident in a car with airbags while not wearing the seat-belt, your chances of survival and injury are the same as having an accident in a car that has neither air bags or a seat belt. This is a fact and a statistic not just something I guessed at." (copy pasted this, just read it and thought i should state i didnt say this! lol)

Better with seat-belt and no airbag than airbag and no seat-belt.

wronger than a wrong thing on the wrong day

its only a failure if the srs light stays on, if it doesn't light up then how can there be a fault, and besides, the mot test is to ensure roadworthyness, how does the air bag affect that???????
also my old black legnum Vdi had its srs disabled due to the wiring issues and that passed its mot no worries at all.

ok got the wheel off again tongiht, and got me a 4" grinder with a metal blade :) sounds bad already! lol

ok before i begin to cut the boss to notch it over the what i think is called the clock spring? is this what also controls my wheel position sensor, i have 3 wires coming out, one for the horn 2 in a yellow case for the airbag? yes?

so basically by me touching nothing apart from leaving the 2 wires in the yellow case disconnected and notching the boss over the box on the spinny wheel, everything should work fine?

Kryton
