I just acquired a second hand server from work, and could use some parts to improve it a bit. I've seen computer parts threads on here before and I know one or two of you work in the IT industry, so here's what I wouldn't mind, if it's cheap or free:

DDR2 PC2-3200 or compatible Registered ECC RAM (in pairs)
An Intel Xeon 3.0GHz with 1MB L2 Cache (to match the single processor it has already - there is space for two) - preferably with a heatsink
SCSI hard drives. I've only got 2x 73.6GB, which is a little limiting. I understand that these aren't exactly cheap though

The server I've got is an IBM eServer xSeries 236 if that gives anyone any more info.

Anyway, not expecting any charity, but if anyone knows of anything going, let me know.
Thanks guys

I have a Dell 1750 (1U) with dual 2.8GHz Xeon CPU lying around at home. It has no RAM. It has two, possibly three (one might be a 36GB) 73GB drives and I might have some more 73's lying around. You're welcome to them all if you want them. Trouble is I'm never in Waihi...

Sounds good. I'm in Auckland reasonably often. Could always use more hard drives. I will have to locate caddies for them though... Anybody got hard drive caddies for IBM xSeries?
Also, do you reckon 2x2.8GHz Xeons with 512kb L2 Cache would be better than 1x3.0GHz with 1024kb L2 Cache?

No IBM equipment I'm afraid. Dual CPU would be better in this case. You can run multiple threads on two instead of one CPUs, hyper-threading would increase that to 4 (two of course "virtual"). 1/2 L2 cache but the systems, effectively have the same total amount.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I'll flick you a PM when I've got concrete plans to go up to Auckland.

We have an x226 here that is just chilling out, I think it has a pair of 3.0ghz xeon's in it.

The problem you have is that a current model i3 530 cpu with an equal amount of ram and a couple of sata drives is going to be faster and better in every way and consume less power than what you have at the moment. Upgrading it will be cheaper too!

Think he's on a budget Brad, can't get better than free :)

I don't even have a specific use for the server yet. Just picked it up for free from work because they were going to throw it away (or recycle it anyway). So yeah, I'm basically just trying to improve the specs a bit without spending too much. If I had specific use for a more powerful server I could buy one.
