Just an inquiry but can a manual gearbox from a vr4 be converted to straight cut gears?

If so who, where, how much approx?

Many thanks.

No idea. The manual VR4 box is fundamentally the same as the Evo box, so options could be the same? I know people have dog boxes in Evos, but I don't know if they use the standard box housing. If they do, the job should be easy - swap the bellhousings and away you go!

Cheer`s Nick, I take a look through the internet & see what I can find.

I think you can buy EVO internals for between £3,000 - £9,000 depending on new/2nd hand, and which company.

What is it your after steve? Just straight cut or do you want dog? I know i can get you ralliart GPA dogbox internals new for around the 4k mark.

All depends on how much you want to spend.

I don`t know yet to be honest Gareth.

Reason is I`m toying with an idea to convert my red vr4 to manual transmission simply because I`ve got to change engine/box anyway

So I`m looking at having a straight cut box of some sorts possibly depending on price`s of course?

I do appreciate this is`nt going to be cheap but I need to weigh up the cost factor to know weather or not to venture down that route.

I won`t start taking it apart until well into next year, I just fancy something different. I will give you a shout maybe nearer that time bud if that`s OK?

:thinking2 Good point Glenn!

To be honest I had a trans X straight cut box in my Mk2 Mexico & that noise is glorious!!

Everybody think`s your giving it beans in reverse when you go by them plus it should be direct drive or something like that in top? So it should be quiter if not no worries

Plus it might not sound so loud as not being between the 2 front seats.

I had the honour of driving a Mk2 escort with a straight cut box. As u say a glorious noise( If you on a Rally Stage) But not something i would like to live with day in day out.. Would totally ruin the driving experience of a VR4's, Smooth V6, IMHO amyway :D

I'd look at using a EVO RS2 gearbox with a 4.11 final drive , they are quiet sturdy as they are used on some big power evos , by default that are only geared to about 130mph but by fitting the 4.11 it pushes that to 167mph and the spread of the gears is done so that the acceleration is top notch

This is what i was going to say. You dont need 5th or 4th for that matter to be straight cut. I'm still a wee bit confused though steve, whats the car going to be used for to warrant a straight cut box?

Myself also.. Unless it's goona be driven like a Rally Car day in day out and Power is going to be 5-600+ bhp. And you need to get that extra bit of power down to the wheels cos your 1/10th of a second of winning each rally stage ? /hmmm
Then it seems a bit OTT /yes
But each to the own /yes Unless you just want the nopise ? Then u could just fit 4 x duff wheel bearing and a knackered transfer box and rear diff :D

be careful with dog boxes, not all dog boxes are the same quality. PPG are one of the best and one of the most expensive, they are one of the few that can take the abuse whilst racing 7-800 bhp EVO's I know a lot of EVO drivers that have killed a lot of dog boxes.

I see all your points guys and I thank you all for your input but like I said it`s something I might consider.

If I went for the 1/2/3 gears straight cut & 4/5 normal I would have the best of both worlds. As for relevance I just love that sound of that gear cut.

I would`nt go for the dog box type simply because of there`s just no point. You might say there`s no point for the straight cut gearing either but as already has been said everyone to there own.

If there`s a mixture of gearing then once your into 4 or 5th away you go back to normal. I do appreciate what everyone`s saying but if cost out weighs what I want from the set up then I`ll just go for a normal manual gearbox set up.
