Just a question about the speed limiter.. How do you know when you've hit it, does the car just stop accelerating or what? Was coming back from christchurch about 4am sunday morning with hardly a car on the road when a Subaru Impreza and some other car overtake the car behind me then the impreza comes flying past me. Interested to see what speed he was doing I followed him but struggled to get much over 180kmph before I lost power and engine started stuttering so I slowed down to 170, god knows how fast the impreza was going I lost sight of the tail lights... So is what I desribed the speed limiter and if so what speed are the vr4's limited to?

There limited to 112mph & yes it just cuts the power. There is an article on here somewhere which wire to cut to de-limit the car.

Yes it sounds like the speed limiter and it's limited to 180km/h. As Aboooooooo says, there's an article on the speed limiter (and its removal) in the Members Area.

You will know when you hit speed cut because the car suddenly feels like it's hit something, the revs will drop a bit, then the car will pick up again.

There's normally a little bit of a cloud of atomised fuel out the back if it's the day time too :)

I think it's actually around the 194Km per hour (120mph). Well, that's where mine seemed about situated and when i slowed down to 180Kph (112mph), that's when power was restored. De- limiting is as simple as cutting one little wire at the ECU, taping the ends to prevent accidental shorts and voila, unlimited. I've cut this wire on mine and it hasn't affected anything else other than a little mark maybe, where the speedo needle touches the bottom plastic. :-p

I think the ecu shows 194 kph or something similar..

My speedo needle also went quite a bit past 180Kph. Might have to get one of those expensive GPS radar detectors that show speed... one day.

It does tend to a bit.. lol ive been in one off the clock so have seen one try and break the needle.. lol

The ECU should be limited to 195 KPH - so it will go off the clock quite a way before hitting speed cut. GPS on your phone should show what speed you are doing.

Yea well, i'd try my phone GPS but my work mate turned it into a slim line model. (left it on a car, fell of and run over) so there goes that idea. Haha.

you are quite right, the EvoScan logs i have retrieved from my white VR-4 show 192/4km/h variations.

Prefacelift auto VR4's (like mine) made from 1996-1998 = 191kW or 260PS. All other VR-4's are 206kW or 280PS (or 276BHP)

Any idea of stock figures ATW or at least at the flywheel. I don't understand why BHP is even used aye. Such a stupid idea.

My white VR-4 made 167kW at the wheels @ 12.7psi with FMIC, 2.5" downpipes and 3" exhaust. Sparking problem (old, wide gapped [1.1mm] plugs which obviously needed to be replaced and were also unsuited to the high boost application) basically killed any hope of a respectable score. Similar specced manuals (none of which had downpipes I hasten to add [at least not to my knowledge] would make ~185kW at the wheels.

I think a bog standard AUTO VR-4 with a Ralliart muffler made around 140kW at the wheels.

Sweet. Sorta gives me an idea of how much i've got. Mine being manual, i should hope for around the 150Kw mark (Still pretty standard other than BOV and took off factory rear muffler). Cheers Ryan

Back on topic, my car, when I first got it topped out at 116mph before the limiter cut in. On a dyno too so I have the print out showing where it peaked.
Also, as said, there is simply one small wire to chop to delimit the car, and I have my car wired to a switch so I can flick the limiter back on if I ever wanted to.

Atik, we just reflash our 7202/3's to put the speed cut out of the cars capability.. lol

Which reminds me, have to go see Pierre before the dyno day..

I was thinking about getting a 7202 or a map2ecu, thoughts?

It was back in 2008 that I did this. The ECU work is much more recent :p

beg4me, we've seen stock manuals around the 160-165kw region.

Sounds good. Will have to throw it on dyno one day to be precise. We bit hard to get to one in my region though as i work full time. Nearest place is an hour drive.

You will have either a 7202 or a 7203 already, so you wont need to go down the map2 route. :)

i think VR4WGN tried a mapecu2 on his... and ended up getting rid of it (i think?) im trying the mapecu2 in my 7G. cant say if i like it or not yet? if it were me.. id just get the ecu re-flashed.

P.s the mapecu wont do speed cut on mitsubishis.

He had a map2ecu on VR4WGN the purple one and i believe it is still in it. A guy i know owns it

I like that idea for whoever drives it!!!! Turn if off for me and turn it back on for missus and label the switch "Wife mode"
