Following on from my thread discussing how crazy the price is for a new steering wheel from Mitsubishi, I attemped to get my red Super wheel de-greased & re-furbished. This all went drastically wrong so I have since been trying to track down a place to re-trim it.

I have only managed to find 2 places that are able to re-trim to the same standard that it left the factory (ie, black leather with red perforated leather, colour co-ordinated stitching & glued around the horns). The only thing that will be lost will be the horn symbols (which I am not bothered about).

The issue is, both places have sent me examples of their work, one is £260 & the other £120. As there is such a big difference, I am concerned about using the cheaper place as just seem too cheap.

Has anyone ever used either of these guys or what would you do. As I am mid process spending an small fortune on the car, I want it to be right, but also don't see the point in spending out for the hell of it.

Here are the links

Any help would be much appreciated & if anyone else wants theirs done, let me know & I will try to get some money off for a job lot :d

Cheers

Chris

PS, I am going to be getting this done within the next 2 weeks so will load up some before & after photos once complete as I am sure this will be of interest due to it being a common problem.

Please do Chris, this is something that I will be doing sometime this year - when I can afford it.

Why not ask the cheaper one what would explain the difference in price. And also ask the same thing to the more expensive one. It might shed some light on things and / or just maybe the expensive one might lower the price a bit?

B-trim in enfield did this for me

from this

to this

for £200 this was expensive due to them not having anything to template from as the wheel is rubber.

This might be worth a go:

http://www.leathercaredirect.com/index.php

They are based in Cheshire and are one of only a handful of places that use a process called Connollisation.

I used them in conjunction with Newera Imports to fix my passenger seat, which had had a couple of tyres transported across from Japan, and marked seven of the seat's panels. I had already had a number of retrimming/restoration experts test the marks and they wouldn't budge.

These guys however sorted it out, and the marks have never been seen again, two and a half years later. The cost was £90. But the process is also good for restoring badly worn leather too - so I guess that they might be able to tell you if the process is suitable for a steering wheel application?

Thanks Nev but I am convinced that my wheel is just too far gone since the first guy had a go at restoring it. On the right hand side, it looks like a dog has had a go at it, to the extent that it is actually about 2mm lower than the rest of the wheel :( I will upload a picture when I get to work tomorrow

I'm getting excited now. Just had confirmation the perforated red leather is an exact match & the tool to emboss the horn logo has been made /woot2

Steering wheel is back & just dropped off to my mechanic ready for my paddles to go on :) I will post up pictures once i've got it back again but the guys I used are great & decent prices. Shame they couldn't sort my horn emboss in the end :(

have you thought of seaching for saddle makers as they are experts in leather work and i remember seeing one of the car programmes on tv going on about saddlers to doing car leather work.

i have fitted some paddles on my steering wheel and they are great to play with and make such a difference to the tip tronic driving experience. i was going to make my paddles but managed to pick up some AMG steering wheel paddles and they were fairly easy to fit, and the clock spring modification was very straight forwand as will.

Kryton

Yeah I investigated the saddles as I know several master saddles but 2 didn't want to touch I because of how our wheels as glued together & 1 wanted to charge me £350 without using perforated red leather

that's quite a lot for a steering wheel.

i too would like to see all the changes.

Here are the pictures. As you can see, the leather is a slightly different colour but a decade of wear probably hasn't helped matters with the original. I will probably take it to a local vinyl specialist to put an enamel coating on it for a closer match & extra protection. The leather is far nicer & the finish is far better than standard though.

Nice job,

shouldn'y you have got the paddles fitted before you had it recovered though, depending on the paddle design you maechanic guy is going to have cut the rubber backing of the steering wheel right up to the new leather, plus there is always the grubby hand senario, dirtying up your new bright leather.

hope all goes well!

Thanks. I'm hoping the mechanic is going to make some mounts / stalks that come out of the holes that are already on the wheel so the can be removed at a later date without damaging the wheel. Will take a bit longer to do but think it will be worth it
