as some may have seen my new 6 puck clutch was making grinding noises when clutch was pressed.
so today i got around to pulling it back out.it turns out the face of my pressure plate is catching on the inside of the bell housing.i then measured the standard pressure plate and then my new one and there is a difference of about 5mil between them.so tomorrow ill see can i get 5mil skimmed from the flywheel and see what happens.

just thought this might be helpful to someone else fitting an evo clutch kit.

Mark I assume that was using a standard VR4 flywheel ?

Yes, John. Standard VR4 flywheel.

There are a couple of reports of this previously. It must be very close, as most people who fit an evo clutch kit to a VR4 with a VR4 flywheel get away with it. The evo flywheel is different in design and holds the working face further from the bellhousing.

I think Carsten ( Gly) posted this up a while ago , 5mm may leave the fly face a little thin

may be better to just get one of Nicks kits and an evo flywheel ?

This was the thread I was thinking about that has come up in the past:

Also, if it is only just rubbing, taking 5mm off seems a bit excessive!

@ nick it is very close just catching the high points of the plate face but im not sure if will stop there .

@ john evo flywheel might be the way to go times tight at the min .how much would you recommend taking off the flywheel ?

if you'd asked me yesterday I could of measured a stock flywheel and seen how much metal is that

will be able to do it on Saturday but I suppose that will be too late ??

@ john .ya sat is a bit late as my car is taking up the ramp at present.but thanks anyway

ill have another look tomorrow ,maybe if i take a little out of the flywheel and give the high points of the plate a rub with the grinder?

ive done the evo clutch on the stock vr4 fly,

i had the fly shotpeened and reserfaced (was a used item) when i did it,
i think its may have removed 1-2mm max ive had no issues with mine,

i would not take 5mm off, as this will leave it weak and prone to shearing/shattering at high rpm,

5mil is a bit much ,i just get a bit excited i could have said ten mil as fast "just to be sure".
ya ill try 2 at most and see how it goes .it must be well cramped in that bellhousing.

do you know where its scraping on the housing?

would it not be safer/easier to remove it from the housing?

When i fitted the carbonetics I had the same problem. Ok, it was an evo4 clutch and it doesnt use a flywheel so to speak its an all in one unit (its a triple plate), but i did have wear. All the wear did was remove the offending obstruction from the gearbox and put a score onto the pressure plate. Obviously a very close fit, but it never caused a problem what so ever. From what i remember, its just a bit of a casting line and so getting rid of that may be the easiest and cheapest solution... or just leave it and see what happens.

Now, I cant say that yours will be ok if you do just leave it, but I can say that mine was totaly fine.

I bought a good skimmed Evo9 flywheel from a Evo specialist in Scotland for about £120 delivered.. Evo 7-9 clutch + one of Nick's spacers.. job done. !!!!!!

flywheel got a 2mil skim today, gave the contact points of the pressure plate a small rub with the grinder .
might give the box a small rub too as you mentioned it and im confident that should sort it tomorrow.
