You will need an OBD II or modified VAGCOM cable like this:

and software to read it such as EvoScan which can be found here:

Hi Ben,

To add to Ryans post above, if you buy a generic VAG-COM cable you'll need to connect pin 1 to pin 4 in the plug (most likely by soldering a small piece of wire between the two pins). If pin 1 doesn't exist, you'll have to add it, take a safety pin and snap off the "needle" part and voila, you've got a new pin to solder in :)

Here is a listing of cable options:

Generic VAG-COM Cable
Read EFI ECU: Yes
Read EFI DTC: No*
Read other ECUs: No
Reflash EFI ECU: No
OpenPort 1.3U Cable
Read EFI ECU: Yes
Read EFI DTC: Yes
Read other ECUs: Yes
Reflash EFI ECU: No
OpenPort 2.0 Cable
Read EFI ECU: Yes
Read EFI DTC: Yes
Read other ECUs: Yes
Reflash EFI ECU: 7202 and 7203 only
As your car is a 96 model, chances are you've got a 7201 ECU and it cannot be reflashed.

If you want more technical information on the whole process, we started a thread a while ago which you can find here: ODB port pinout (http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?50418-OBD-port-pinout).

Welcome to Club VR-4 btw :)

* To my knowledge. I had no success reading DTCs with my modified VAG-COM cable.

Wow great thanks mate!

What's EFI DTC? Also do you know if I will be able to change values or does that come under the reflash

I think that means it can read and reset error codes

DTC = Diagnostic Trouble Code.
You will not be able to change any parameters in the ECU, this is reflashing. But being 96, as aluded to, you wont be able to reflash anyway as this ECU is not reflashable.

Ah great thanks guys. Apparently it's been dyno tuned or something So hopefuly it's got the later ecu, I'll have to find it and have a look at the numbers.
