Like an idiot, i have broken the front windscreen. Now its cracked, all the way down.:sigh:

The screen is a cold spec one with heated strip: MR192662.

Am i fooked? How do i go about sorting this one out?

They are about £280 fitted from the dealer. Mine is cracked and I'm just putting up with it at the moment. I plan to phone around the windscreen companies next week and see if I can do a deal.

Dont you get it cheaper through your insurance & it doesn't effect you no claims?

I only have £80 excess. Will phone to see what can be done about it. Problem i see is it might take ages to get the correct glass. I think i might have to settle for a normal Galant screen.

If you are fully comp then the excess is normally £50. I am only 3rd party so it's not so simple.

I am fully comp. Autoglass just quoted £856!!! Will i lose my no claims over this?

Wow. I'm not sure. I'd check with your insurance unless someone on here knows.

Thanks for the reassurance. I haven't got a clue what i'm doing at the mo apart from blaming myself for being a right idiot.

So, here is the plan?

Get quotes from Autoglass, Auto Windscreen, RAC. etc.
Phone insurance company (Markerstudy via Sky).

I think i should just phone the insurers and see what they say.

Idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot........idiot.

Feeling a lot calmer now.

Auto Windscreen are dealing with it. Should get a call on Monday stating how long it will take to get it sorted.

The operator reckons i can drive with a cracked windscreen so long as it does not obscure my line of vision. Is that true? What about pelting it down the motorway?

Yep it will hold for a good while. As long as you don't get a stone flung up from a car or lorry in front you should be fine

Front screens are laminated so are a lot stronger than you think, even when cracked. If you are fully comp then that is the way to go. Iirc you have to declare glass claims but they don't affect ncb or premiums.

I am now looking forward to hearing the story of how it got broken though...

I had mine replaced by Autoglass in Birmingham last month. First spoke to them on 8th Feb and they fitted it on the 12th March.
It took nearly five weeks because it was special order from Japan through Mitsubishi.

Bugger, bad timing dude, I've just skipped a good cold spec screen.

Unlucky Jamil. I found a breaker car with a cold spec screen, bought it for £50, called some glass fitters out to site and they removed it from the breaker car, removed my old one and fit the other, all for £30. That was the same as my excess at the time and I sorted it in one day. I had been quoted up to 8wk waiting time to source a cold spec.

I have a provisional date of 14th April though feel ok to drive as the screen is not cracked in my line of vision.

Dear Nick, the clues you need are - bass, rattling, mirror, replacement......

I must have been lucky, I went to Autoglass, ordered the screen, it turned up a week and a half later and cost me 70 quid on the insurance. No drama at all!

Would be a good idea. New blades, new window. Your old ones may be slightly worn to the scratches or chips in the old one? I replaced mine with the flat blade variety. Spot on.

Folks, need help on my V6-24V elegance screen. I had a call from the windscreen replacement company asking which I had, a standard screen or one with heating elements. Both are with green tints.

Can anyone help with what an 03 model, UK spec, would have come with, please.

Ive had the car 3 years but I don't know if the current screen has ever been replaced in it's life before my ownership.

Thank you :-)

I've not seen a non-vr4 with heating elements on the front screen. If you have them, there will be a switch by your right knee with a windscreen/squiggly line button.

Thanks, Nick! No windscreen element button on my dash / by my right knee. Thanks for clearing this up for me. :-)
