View Full Version : High-performance ATF?

Does anyone know if there's any high-performance automatic transmission fluid that's better than Dexron III at coping with the higher temperatures generated by fast driving and more frequent use of the box (e.g. on track)?

Does the VR4 have its own ATF cooler? The FTO has one built into the radiator and it is crap, one of the first things to do is make sure its got its own oil cooler mini rad.

The VR-4 is the same - cooler built into the radiator and not really up to the job. I had a Derale 13104 cooler fitted - 16" x 10" x ¾" - which helped but I still feel that the performance degrades as the temperature builds. Maybe I'm just expecting too much from an auto box ... ;)

Did Oulton shortly after getting VR-4 and using sequential change I had temp light on after a couple of sessions I think

But at the Ring I have never had this happen when using sequential - I usually only use 3rd and 4th at the Ring

So I guess it will depend on the frequency/number of changes at ? Elvington - flowing nature of track - whether you want to have benefit of acceleration in 2nd rather than slower pick up in chicanes/hairpins

Perhaps run in 4th as top and then only drop to 3rd - use torque in these two gears

depends on layout on airfield - see how it goes

I think Wirdy may know more, but Amsoil do a high-spec fully synthetic ATF that not only meets & exceeds the Dexron III standard, but also the mythical Mitsubishi DiaQueen ATF SP-II specification as well. It may be worth seeeing if Demon Tweeks or somewhere stocks it.

If u have been using DexronIII fluid in ur trans without any problems then u should try this stuff:

It sounds like its just what the doctor ordered :-b

I saw a review done about a year ago on Trust, HKS, and a few other tuning houses engine oils compare to the Mobil 1, Castrol RS etc, the out come of the test was basically Trust and HKS should stick to what they do best, making add ons, and leave the oil to the experts in that field.

What oil are u going to use? Are u going to try a Synthetic like the Amsoil or the Redline?

For myself i would looking at the Redline High-Temp ATF or the Amsoil Synthetic ATF due to running higher BHP than normal.

Was down at my mates garage yesterday and was talking to him about an EVO they had in with a knackered AYC. Apparently someone had put low grade ATF in it. The old EVO`s upto VI use to use ATF+2 (what ever that is) but the latest VII & VIII`s now use a new product ATF+3 (??) obviously not DexronIII which has been arround years. May be worth doing a bit of digging about it...just done a quick search and mobile do some http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil_ATF3.asp

After contacting the tech department of Amsoil their synthetic ATF oil is highly recomended. Amsoils synthetic ATF is designed for Mitsubishi Diamond SP II & III.

I'm still trying to get some here in NZ but the dealer seems a bit slack.

If anyone is doing a ATF change soon it would be a good idea to use this product.
