Hi, back to my wanting a Legnum which happens every so often! Have seen this one:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260764656184&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Has anyone come across the people selling it before? I would be inclined to get it inspected but they are complex beasts (although no more so than modern stuff now I suppose).

One thing, he claimed it was PLG tax - I thought if it is a recent import it will be subject to the over £400 nonsense. Can anyone shed any light? thanks

Having a look now...

Tax would indeed be the 'over 1500cc' category of £215 per year, however. This is regardless of manufacture date or import date.

You sure though? I had read that after a certain date, it didn't matter about the year of manufacture, it was the emissions that counted. So a 1999 car, if it puts over the dreaded whatever, will be taxed as if it were new.......

The link isn't working for me.

And yes, as Nev says on the tax. There is no co2 figure for the car, so it is done on engine size alone.

ebay item number is 260764656184 - apologies if the link doesn't work...

Actually, can I also ask something really daft. I am 6ft and 17 stone. I had a Subaru Legacy 3.0 spec B which was fine, but the previous gen Outback was a squeeze. Is there plenty of room for a big bloke in the Leggy? thanks

As already said above they are all £225 per year & not done on CO2. Even mine, which is a uk car & new enough to be done on emissions, it still isn't. Also, I am almost 6' 5" & approx 15 stone & fit in fine. I have noticed though that the Recaros & the electric seats from a standard Galant do go back slightly further though for some reason (assuming different seat rails).

yes there is plenty of room for you in a legnum , ask our larger members

as for the tax - any car registered before march 2001 has either 2 tax brackets 1.5 l and below or 1.5 l and above ,after that date it goes into co2 bands.

The VR-4 has no CO2 figure, wasn't released for the Euro market and didn't get type-approved. That's why you can have a 2003 VR-4 and it still be taxed at £225 a year (yes, now remembered it has gone up!).

As for that dealer (I know it was a question in the OP!), might have seen them before, but they seem to like fast JDM estates, looking at the other cars in their pics! I also get the impression that they don't deal in much else, don't have massive overheads (looks like a fairly private farm) and worth a look, IMO.

The link works now - must have been an issue from my phone. That car has been around for a while, which I guess is shown in the price reduction! I don't know anyone who has used the dealer - I'd say treat it as a private sale and check the car over. If it is clean, it is a good price, I'd say.

And what Nev says about the tax. (Did I say that before? :P ) No European type approval = no CO2 figure = impossible to tax on CO2. Therefore 2002 VR4's still get taxed on the previous system of engine size. Bobby bargain! I'm sure they would be in the higher band if there was a CO2 figure.

thanks chaps - good to know. I'll get an inspection organised - although the paranoia in me says why has it hung around if it is decent? But I suppose the market for these things must be drying up as everyone rushes to get 1.0 Fiestas...

Well it was never worth £4995 that's for sure ! Worth having a look at that price though /yes

Well, if all goes to plan will be able to arrange inspection of the beastie early next week. I know it has been asked 1000 times before but can anyone point me in the direction of what I need to look for and what I can expect to go wrong? Daft as it may seem I am hoping this thing will be reliable enough in the main to offset the fuel consumption......

Rust in the wheel arches, check where the strut meets the underside of the car. There will be some there, but make sure it isn't lots!

Check for a red AYC light coming on as you turn the ignition key. It should go out after a couple of seconds and then stay out until the next time you start the car.

Check the colour of the ATF fluid - the dipstick is by the side of the battery. If the fluid is ruby red and the car changes gear nicely then you can be more happy than if the fluid is brown and/or the gearchanges are harsh.

Most other stuff is as per any other car to be honest!

I see the dealer's in Leyburn, about an hour away from me.
You could call round and have a look at mine;

http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?54850-FS-1996-Mitsubishi-Legnum-VR4-Manual-North-Yorkshire

It might be too old for you and one of the rear wheelarches has been resprayed, but I've had it on ebay for £1800 with no bids, so I'd let it go for £1600.

Did anything come of this? I notice that the car is STILL for sale. I have tried to contact them on numerous occasions by email and phone and been unable to get anywhere. In the end I gave up and bought my VR4 from Ebony & Ivory.
