View Full Version : Wavetrac LSD

After a lot of searching and deliberation, have just got a Wavetrac LSD. As anyone with a VR2 or Evo engine G will tell you, although fun, the wheel spin issue can be a little tiring at times! I'm assured by Wavetrac themselves that this will fit the F5M42 box and indeed I have already tried my spare driveshafts and they're good. Will be a few weeks before I fit it, but will update as and when and of course hopefully a shakedown at the Ring.

Mark, thought you'd be interested! Will be good to see just how effective this thing will be. Not driven a FWD with a LSD before.
Wodj, well what can I say? Far out man, phychedelic etc etc /pan lol

This thread is going way off topic in places!! When I do get my lazy ar$e round to fitting this beastie, I'll probably start a new (relevent) thread LOL :)

All I can say is about bloody time!! Glad you went for it in the end Andy, it will transform the car. You will adjust your driving style for it as lsd's in FWD are very odd at first, but you soon cant live without them!

I will definitely have to get a pax lap with you this time round!

I installed a Quaife LSD in my FWD Magna which is a very similar LSD to the wavetrac.. and it was fantastic, difference was night and day, I loved it.

Best mod I ever spent serious coin on.

Loving this thread, one for you comedians LOL and two for the positive comments about FWD with a LSD, as I said earlier not driven FWD with one fitted so getting quite exited!!! I do have a great video of the car snorting and spinning at the ring. If I can get a link on here I will coz then I'll do another at the ring with it fitted. As for demos this weekend in the rain - nah, I'm working and car tucked up in bed!!

Works fine Andy/yes You can hear the car spinning the wheels. What BOV you using? It sounds like the car is sneezing:)

The Vee

OK mate that's good. Do you know though, I'm getting a bit senile and can't remember the make of the BOV. I know it's a good quality Aus made one. Wodjno will know the make as I believe he had one similar. I'll know the name as soon as someone says it!!

Just waiting for the speedo drive gear to arrive. All stripped out and found that diffs fitted to this box have the speedo drive as part of the cast casing for the diff. The new diff casing is machined to accept a separate drive as fitted to a 2G eclipse (same size as mine hopefully!!). Told it should be here tomorrow as it was factory order.................. Why wavetrac can't supply this as part of the package, or even an option, is anyones guess.

OK Drive is here and appears to fit. Got a little more checking and fiddling to do and then start putting it all back together. Just off out in a mo to use a press as all new bearing to go in as well.

Enough jabbering, you've had 8hrs since you posted, it should be back together by now :D

Shame to drop it in that manky gear oil though, it is a thing of beauty

Had a few problems with the bearings. Used the local dealer's press, but do you think they had the right adapters? So, have had the resort to old skool tech. So inner races split and and ejected - bloody tuf them Koyo races! Some are now refitted but despite use of freezer, front output shaft outer race is being a complete twat and does not want to go back in the casing. Have put it away for now coz I could see a little red mist forming!

Any progress?

On another note, I remember you were looking for an uprated V6 sway bar (couldn't find the right topic though, sorry). By accident, I stumbled on this. Anyone any ideas?
Addco #2149 – 99-02 Galant Rear 7/8” Sway Bar $235
http://www.importcarpartsplus.com/galantsuspension.htm

It's clearly a USDM focussed product, but I have no idea if there's a difference in the sway bars between the euro/JDM and USDM N/A cars.

The Vee

Hi Mark
Yes the LSD is fitted and the car runs fine. Not had a chance to really try it out. Sometimes I think it is more sure footed round corners if you push it, but I find I can still punch through it quite easily and make the wheel spin!! Perhaps not quite so much though to be fair. I really need to do a track day somewhere so I can properly judge. As for the sway bar, you have found the only one I can currently find also. As you know I spend a fair amount of time on USDM sites, and this bar gets a fairly good review although some do report clearance issues. The rear suspension set up on the USDM Galant does "appear" to be the same as ours, of course the front is very different. I will probably be taking a chance on the Addco bar, will be ordering maybe next week. I'll let you know if there are any issues.

Bump! Andy, we need an update :)

The Vee
12-02-2012, 04:38 PM
No real updates I'm afraid. The car has been hibernating since its initial run with the LSD. I do have the sway bar, but not got anywhere near the car with it as I've not really had time and it's too cold for me out there!. I will of course update things when I get round to some more work on the car. The sway bar itself does look like a nicely made bit of kit and is very much thicker than the one that's on there. Don't forget though, this is for a FWD car at the rear - so may be of no value to an AWD.

NLduffyNL
10-05-2012, 09:25 PM
Hey Andy,

How is your LSD going? Did you have a chance to give it a good try for testing?
The upgrade was worth it?

Where is the promised thread for LSD on FWD? ;) O:)

The Vee
10-05-2012, 11:46 PM
Same as the post above yours! Car has not been out this year yet and is unlikely to be doing much before October when it will make it's pilgrimage to that lovely little village in Germany. Of course should it come out for an early run I will update any findings. TBH the real test of the LSD was always going to be the Ring, just that an earlier trip wasn't made this year.

NLduffyNL
11-05-2012, 05:05 PM
ok i thought you might tried how the launching go's by now (if you have less wheelspin in 1st 2nd and sometimes 3th)
We'll have to wait then ;)

The Vee
11-05-2012, 06:43 PM
Yep I will report on it once it's up and running again. The LSD only made one trip and that was mainly normal road driving. The only thing I can say is that I can get the wheels still to spin but perhaps a little less. However, it did feel a little more sure footed on one or two higher speed corners. Not enough on road though to give a fair write up at the moment.

The Vee
09-04-2013, 02:55 PM
Never did update this, well not here anyway!
Combination of the LSD and rear uprated ARB is quite marked. Where the car used to understeer quite excessively if pushed, it is now quite the opposite! Certainly traction is improved with the LSD but coupled with the ARB it appears quite tail happy. Needed to get used to it and adjust some settings at the back to calm it down a little. It is better, glad I did it, but no warning at all when it's about to let go!

Spirit

Isn't that the wrong way around mate.......used to understeer and now oversteers ?
