With the demise of our flashchat due to the coder who created it dissapearing of the face of the earth I will be looking to set up a new chat feature for the CVR4 Members.

First up I have installed a facebook style approach with a tool called envolve, you can disable it like so.

46933

I've yet to fully understand how it works so bear with me, i have noticed a bit of "judder" when typing this message, i think its relating to envolve - i dont like it.

anyways, have a look, play, see what you think, then respond here. It is the free version so there may be enhancements on the full version.

Thanks
Barry

Hi,

This has potential but i see several hurdles before this becomes 1 stop chat feature.

1. The costs, it's very expensive.
2. Hosted, this causes delay - we must compare to facebook as they are leading this field - There you can surf whilst the chat stays in place, with this it goes away, re-appearing only once the webpage has loaded - in some cases i found that when i start typing the title of a thread the chat grabs my curser attention and i type the thread title into the last chat window i had open. Very frustrating this.
3. It appears that a public chat still requires people to be invited? Why is this? Also, if they X the tab, it disappears, a public chat should remain indefinitely in my opinion especially if I have configured it at the back end.
4. allow for far more customisation of colours and css styles, it is important to have it look like the site - im sure others will agree.
5. less is more, there is to much info everywhere - allow option to disable to extra info for users (when you hover over name) its very messy and worthless for our site.

Thanks

I quite like the idea of envolve, it has chat history which means if you crash / time out, you don't miss anything :)

No sound notifications though..

Well, that seems to work ok. Just the large tabs - perhaps they could be relocated?

if you block someone in the evolve chat the only way to unblock them is to clear your cache / cookies - which is a pia

I was just speaking to one of the developers about this, he mentioned all thats needed to clear them is close browser and reopen, was this done?

Yep that works Barry , I used there online chat support and was told that you needed to clear the cache etc

How much is it ?

Agreed, I was about to spam about being annoyed by that... fortunately I read this thread.

My main concern with things like this is whether it uses bandwidth or not. If I want to check the forums at work, I need to worry about bandwidth because excessive usage will get me in big trouble.
This along with the number of "hits" the club forums generates is the #1 reason I am MUCH less active on the forums than I was a couple of years ago. (not being able to have the forums open at work because I got in trouble for excessive use :P)

Thank @^<* for that.........you can turn it off /woot

too annoying, judder and just dont see myself using it much if at all,
the IM function we used to have was more useful IMO

what was wrong with existing the flash chat?

I am coping with this when surfing the site from a PC. However I hate it when using my phone. I have an Android phone with tapatalk, but hate the tapatalk function - so I surf the site normally. The chat boxes cause a second loading phase to happen, after you think the page has completed. This gets in the way of all sorts of things, like replying to a thread, hitting the back button etc. Just as you think it is safe to scroll/click the page jumps again as the web address bar appears for it's second loading stint. The second major issue is that the chat boxes don't stay in the bottom right properly. They try, but after about a page worth of scrolling, they lock at that line and start moving up the screen with the page. This means that at a certain distance down the page I can't read a sentence or two of text. The only way round this I have found is to change the zoom level so the words I can't see get displaced to the left of the screen.

Bring back Pager!

Wish i could :( - its just on longer available.

NIck, i am aware of this issue, it can be disabled.

I'll be removing this chat feature shortly, there are to many niggles with it that do not see it fit for purpose.

ok, i have now disabled the envolve chat feature - too many niggles with that one!

Next up we have a more traditional chat tool, please navigate to forum root (http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/forum.php) and at the top you will see the chat box. Please note that if we find this suitable I will put effort into making it appear in a new window, rather than inline with the forum.

feedback welcome!

This looks exceedingly promising, and my limited testing of it so far suggests that the developers have gone for more of a substance over style approach!

I like this one, and as mentione in chat, I think if it opened to a new page, that would be ideal.

Could this be implemented to open on the 'Live Posts' screen, so that you can still see whats coming in on the forums?

BraindG
27-07-2011, 12:36 PM
That wouldn't be a problem Atik, i quite like that idea actually - chat and see new posts, all in one :) /GJ

I've disable the shoutbox style chat and resintalled flashchat, the quest to find a new chat continues!

Thanks for your co-operation during this time.

What was the issue with the shoutbox one Barry? Seemed OK.

My biggest issue is that I go to flashchat and then get distracted with all the other threads I'm reading or participating on and I don't see the messages. A combination of FlashChat and the Evolve systems would be perfect, you can keep track of the messges no matter where you are.

have fingers, will fiddle!

I've installed another facebook style chat mod - there is a chat room (bottom left) and the ability to chat to your CVR4 friends, if you have not got any friends they will not show up. To add friends go here (http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/profile.php?do=buddylist) and add people you want to chat to.

Please revert with questions and stuff.

It's no so obvious but - click on Chat Room tab to activate the General chat tab!

Seems to fit the bill so far, simple but functional.

I have disabled this for the short term, it was causing quite a few people issues.

Bump! Barry my dear fellow, can we get a new chat system on the go? :)
