Still under warranty, I would hope.... thats where I would be heading, straight away... ;)

Other than complete internal destruction :lipsrseal , it may well have popped a shaft out somewhere, and could be a simple - push it back in - jobbie.... :|

the cars an auto and im well miffed off the internals are shattered (again)thats twice in ten months ive only done 5500 miles in it. its going up to glasgow to be repaired tommorow and ive been told itll take 3-4 days and ive got to foot the bill after £1000 of repairs are reached cos of the warranty so ill keep it till jan then its off it can be someone elses problem. never before have i had so much bother with a car, dont get me wrong i love the drive of the car but its just the expense and hassle of changing boxes ,my mate has had a motor for three years and he constantly thrashes it and i mean thrashes it just about every day and wait for it its a SCOOBY (awaiting the hairdresser jokes)and the only costs that have occured to him are service costs so i think i will be down the scooby trail come january as i was thinking of of one before i seen the galant (wish i hadnt now)

:sad3: :sad3:

Sorry to hear this... Shame about the warranty being useless. :(
Was the work carried out by a trusted mechanic ?

Since my rebuild, I am constantly concerned over the slightest ill behaviour from the box, although , I am 99% certain that the rebuild was sound.
I am just running with the theory that the original components lasted 70K miles before eating themselves, so the parts used in the rebuild should last the same again...

When I was shown the remains of the last box, I was surprised to see what gave way and you could clearly see how it happened. It was no freakish break, the shaft had been twisting and finally had to snap.

You should definately have a look at the parts that are removed to see if its the same part going each time, there could be a quality issue with certain components. :lipsrseal

Good Luck with the rebuild, and I hope you get a return on any money spent if and when you do sell.

Ed

funny enough thats what happened to my first one, should be hearing from the mechanic shortly he recons he can do a rebuild for about £1400 so at least £1000 of that is covered keep u posted

:-D :-D

Thats about what I paid, and fingers crossed, so far so good...
Still, not the best Birthday present you could have got.

Look into getting a warranty with the rebuild, most places should offer 12 month/12,000 miles automatically.

Hope it all goes well, and that you dont end up selling the poor old girl.

oh yeah, hope your birthday makes up for any annoyances recently.

  :cool1: :guitar:

And me – I have noticed a whirling noise from the gear box – mainly in the 1st 3 gears – sounds like a turbo, but sadly not installed. (Manual box)

I think its a bearing but how should I get this sorted

Take it to Mitsi or a local transmission specialist?

Depends on whether car still has warranty or not. If no warranty I'd be inclined to go to specialist as my confidence in Mitsi dealer repairs and fault findings is at a pretty low ebb.
Shame to hear all these gearbox probs arising - but if there is a weak link with these, the gearbox has always been up there.

ive been told that the spline shaft doesnt house all the way in (mitsi problem)when it goes through the torque converter it leaves about an inch and thats where the problem is and causes the shaft to snap.its a common problem with them apparently accordng to mackie auto transmissions (where i took the car) the advise i was given was to get rid of the car or stop hammering the crap out the car,so since getting the car back there has been no more of giving bmw drivers red faces at traffic lights:( still lovin the motor though and determined not to get rid of it. cheers andy for the sticky one;)

HI,
I got a cost from Mackies in Glasgow of £1400 plus vat for a full rebuild, I was put on to them by a mitsy dealer who uses them, the guy from mackies said that they had done 7 or 8 GTO triptronic boxes, they give a 1 year warranty with a fully refurbed box, he also said that the boxes they had done all had mileages ranging from 70.000 to 90,000 miles, (I would have thought that a new car's gearbox would last longer than 90,000), but Mackies seem to know what they are talking about.
In the end the red zebra warranty that I got covered my gearbox, on a like for like basis, so the mitsy dealer did the work, only problem was I had to wait 4 weeks for a triptronic gearbox to come from mitsy Japan, good luck

Thats how much mine cost, inc. the vat.
And mine was just approaching 70,000 miles.
Guy showed me what had happened, a shaft had been slowly twisting its splines (sp) until it just fractured off, destroying many plates.. :sad3:
My mitsu dealer wouldn't touch it, they contract all autobox work out.
The place they sent me seemed like a bunch of idiots, so I seeked advice here and got pointed in the right direction. ;)

65,000 blissful, gearbox worry-free miles to cover yet.... :-D
