Recently my tacho has begun having a mind of its own and only works when it feels like it. Upon further checking, it appears to work fine when first starting and for a while when running however, as soon as the engine temp begins to rise, it quickly drops down to a zero reading. I have a reputable technition who specialises in all type of gauge repairs, he had the car for a day, removed the tacho, checked all solder points to ensure no dry joins then bench tested the unit and found it was working while on the bench however, when reconnected, the same problem occured. According to him, the tacho itself is not the problem but apparently from where it gets its signal. As there is very little known here about Vr4's and the typical Mitsubishi service department or Mitsubishi dealer's mechanics are not familiar with these so it's difficult to get any assistance here, Apparently, there are different places where the signal can originate but as they are not obvious. he is reluctant to start dismantelling things. Does anyone know from where the tacho picks up its signal or has anyone confronted and rectified a similar problem? any/all suggestions will be appreciated.

the loom for the gauges is connected below the stereo. There are 4 large plugs where the engine loom connects too.

First thing is to check the sensor readings. You may ask your mechanic to connect his engine tester to the diagnostic port and check what the ECU is reading.

id try your kmh to mph converter bud, when they play up your gauges do sometimes have a brainfart. thats if you have on fitted that is

it'll be the ifs sensor on the front cyl head, its a common fault. I might have one somewhere

As Pauls suggestion above try the IFS. :)

Another vote for IFS here too.

Craig - as far as I know tacho normally refers to rev counter rather than speedo?

If the IFS dies completely you will loose both the tacho and the speedo.... Have seen it on a vr over here. :)

On an MPH-converted UK VR-4, I would be looking at the converter first.

Not unless it's been wired in REALLY badly, I suppose...

Hmm, there isn't a spade big enough to cover up the fact I thought he said speedo! /pan
