Hey people, this is my first day on this forum, iv got the legnum str (no turbo for insurance 19yo :) ) Anyway, iv had bit of a rough time since i bought it back in novemeber 2003 with 5K spent on rebuilding the crappy unserviced auto, and transfer box ex. Japan, which wasn't picked up in my prepurchase check. Anyway, since then its developed a type of low/mid groaning noise between 2500 and 3000 revs, its really weird, my box is still under warranty, and the people there are convinced its as good as ever.

It doesn't seem to affect the drivability, but is really annoying, i read in the buyers guide that the top end can develop a noise, but i have no idea.

Anyone out there had similar? i'm in auckland NZ and looking for a place who will know what to look for, or someone to give me some insight?

Cheers, mpau009.

Was it serviced by a Mitsubishi Dealer. They have access to a special transmission fluid for their transmissions, which solve many problems.

Theres an idea! it was serviced by an auto specialist, i don't think its the box, cause its just had its first 6mnth service, and apart from abit of contamination the oil looked pretty good considering the break in period. they also check the exhaust for leaks, and movement, and that came up fine.

Iv read abit about this lifter noise in the other forums, would that be likely? the noise is only present when the car is in gear, accross the full gear range, and only for that 500 revs above. Its a weird one, i don't know how to go about isolating it, or easy checks for common faults etc. also, the noise is loudest when accelerating (when slowing its far less noticable).

Some suggestions have been the transfer box, or something to do with the torque at that range on the engine. the legnums upto about 95000k's, and i'm looking to get the cam belt changed soon, is it possible to get them to take a look at other parts? what should they look for etc, to try and eliminate the engine as a source?

Any ideas??

Lifter noise comes from the engine and is a tapping sound. More apparent at first start up and cold engine so your 'groan' doesn't fit that category.
Auto transmission maybe ?
