View Full Version : Turbos off a GTO/3000GT twin turbo = upgrade?

From searching it looks like people have said that these turbos are a pain to get onto our cars, however it looks like I may be able to get a set of the TD04's from a GTO/3000GT fairly cheaply (or even free).

Since I've slightly damaged the lip on my front turbo I may as well look into this upgrade - however, I can't find specs on the TD03's.

Does anyone have specs of the TD03's or know offhand if the TD04's will be a significant enough upgrade?

The TD04 is a 9B, 49177-02300.

I dont have the specs for the stock td03 turbo but here you can find info about the 9b and other GTO upgrade turbos. I think the 9b is so small it wont be worth it

The practical max CFM for the TD04-9B is 250... so would be very interesting to see how this compares to the TD03.

Mitsubishi doesn't have much info about the TD03 turbo on the MHI site.

td03-7
td04-9

would be cheaper to get bmw135 turbos which are td03-10

got figures how they (bmw's) tweek them up to 500bhp

If i recall correctly? I remember seeing figures somewhere 275cfm for our TD03's ? And the same for the TD04-9b's.

i will never understand why you 8G guys continue to run twin turbo setups? with BOV's and roller bearings lag is no longer a issue? if it is you can always kick the clutch :P

IMO if your going to go td04's it would be much more benificial to get 2 tdo4 (12t ?) from a 2.0 subaru wrx more power potential. as far as i have heard the gto stock turbos arent that good.

Didn't Gowf use GTO turbos on his? I'm not sure what the spec was though, I seem to remember different GTO's had different versions of the TD04.

Cheers,

It will be nice to try the billet 19t !! GTO and 3000GT US use td04 9B , 3000gt EU version use 13G , but you can find easly other td04 like 13T , 15G and 15T and 19T! just check the inucer and exducer of the turbine wheels to have a good spool :)

Yes, Scuby's TD04HL-13T seems quite efficient and cheap option, also easy upgrade in a future for -19T!
Still, custom manifolds and downpipes.

Louis, I did search last night :P didn't see anything about which turbos were used unfortunately. However, it HAD been a long day...

Only reason I was considering the TD04-9B's is due to getting them cheap/free and they are in pretty good nick... however if our standard turbos flow the same or outflow them, there is no point in getting them.

I've seen people saying that they can get 17-18 psi with them standard on the GTO's, but this isn't really an improvement on what we have at the moment... if it could flow more, then sure that would be great. If not - no point anyway.

Also - from what I've seen they may bolt up to our manifolds? May see if I can borrow a TD03 and a TD04 that fits onto the 3000GT/GTO and see what differences there are in terms of bolting them on. I know that there will be SOME custom work, but it depends on how much there will be as to if it is worth upgrading.

Yep it was uk spec 04 13g's.

There is loads on here on how i did it and what it made. Its been asked that many times now that i do get bored repeating it.

I bought miself two of those 13g:s but they're missing the exhaust side and wastegates so they're nothing but expensive paper weights....

Well, the guy is bringing round one of the turbos on Saturday for us to have a look and see if it fits... unfortunately he doesn't have the exhaust housing for the front turbo, so will need to see what can be done there.

I also looked into the TD03-10's from the BMW, but I would either need to replace the entire cartridge, or cut off the old manifold and weld our ones on - the BMW turbos will not be cheap to obtain here in NZ either.

I did a bit of research earlier, and I think the turbo may flow up to 20% more than the TD03's from what information I've been able to find, along with potentially holding higher boost till the redline. If these fit easily, I may as well give it a go - they can be found fairly cheap, so even if they give only a mild performance increase, it at least opens up the road to get the 9B's changed to a 13 (apparently it can be done according to a few guys in the US).

The td04 9b's can easily be changed to a 13g or even bigger (theres loads of options for the gtos). Whether it can be done on a VR4 is down to how you have your manifolds made, or how you go about modifiying things to fit, as what you find is that the core does become a bit bigger (I was going to put bigger ones on mine but would have had to mill down the water banjo). Also, with the 13g's on mine i did make 444bhp, which was more than enough for a standard engine if you want it to last.
