View Full Version : Discs and pads - my options?

Ok, following on from the other thread about tyres and discs (the tyre thing sorted itself out when they two of my wheels went flat before I was able to get the car off the road.....) who should I speak to about discs and pads?.

I'd like a range of options from the budget end of the spectrum to the money no object pads to melt end of the market.

I'm told the front discs need doing and it's pads all round. So, educate me. :dozey:

The quick answer is that any pad or disc designed for an EVO 4 will work for a stock VR4.

Consensus here appears to favour Ferodo DS2500 pads, but for my money anything is better than stock!

The DS2500s seem to work very well, I used to have Mintex ones on the front and they disappeared very rapidly! Other members have tried Red Stuff pads and worn them out in a week. Also used are the Pagid RS something or others at £150 a pair :rolleyes5

I have spyed in the latest Demon Tweeks catalogue Ceramic Front discs and pads for a snip under £1000!!!

For this money I would be looking at a Brembo/AP/KAD big brake conversion all of which members are using.

To be honest unless you are in the habit of ALWAYS jumping on the brakes or doing the occasional track day the sensible option is some grooved discs and DS2500s.

Yep, a little investigation on my part and a call to demon tweeks revealed that I'd be looking at £300 for some EBc discs and green stuff pads. The national grooved discs and pads sound like a much more sound purchase for someone whose only intention of getting near a track day is a minimoto/go kart track car park!.

The Greenstuff pads are crap mate - the National/DS2500 set up is good on trackdays too - better set up and cheaper !

The Greenstuff pads are crap mate -

Totally agree! perhaps it's just the weight if our cars because I had EBC greens on an escort & they were fine.

EBC greens on a VR4........just replace the pads for blocks of wood instead - you'll get better braking!!

I tried the Woodford link and it didn't work for me - Can somebody post a phone number as I wouldn't mind ordering a set ready for my return to the UK

Hi Marsh,
If you are interested, I have the complete front brake set off my car waiting in my garage. They include National Grooved Discs and Ferrodo ds 2500 pads which are only about a month old and Calipers also.
If you are still interested drop me a PM.

I've just put Mintex M1155 pads on the front (tonight) so have only done about 20 or 30 miles to see what they are like.

Brakes have gone from crap to good in one easy move.

I got them here http://www.brakesint.co.uk/shop.html for approx £100 inc VAT.

No idea how long lived they'll be but they certainly stop the car a lot better. I have managed to turn the discs grey/ blue already tonight and had smoke piling off them at one stage and still no fade at all! It took me a few seconds to realise that the cloud in the rear view mirror was from the brakes...

Incredible difference - one or two hard stops on the old pads would give noticeable fade.

Apparently the M1155 do not need any special bedding in procedure - just as well, really!

The car is on std cheap as chips discs from the same company.

They do drilled/ grooved discs for about £80 each, but I don't know if anybody has ever used them.

Cheers,

Calum

Hi Calum - i cant see a listing for VR4s online, did u call them?

I did end up having to call them as they are special order, but you can see the price and fitting kit, etc online.

They don't list the VR4 but the VR4 pads are the same as the EVO IV (and looks like it may be the same as the I, II and III also). I know the discs are the same as the pre-Brembo EVO IV but the earlier EVOs may have had less studs - really not sure.

Select Mitsubishi. Type EVO in the box at the bottom then click proceed.

Click on the front friction section. BPS2173 is the std part. Click the associated button and you will see BPC2173 - these are the mintex M1155 pads. BPF1194 is the spring clips for the front of the VR4 too, although you probably won't need this.

Pads were 80.52, pad fitting kit 6.25 and shipping 6.75, all to be plus VAT. Total would be £109.86 including the fitting kit or 102.54 without.

Was out in the car again today and even from cold the difference is excellent. Pedal pressure to hold against Drive at standstill is less, and pedal force at any speed/ braking situation is less than was required before - much more relaxing to drive now knowing that you can stop if you need to!

has anyone bought these recently????

Is 230 stil the price or have they gone up??

I'm trying to decide whether to possibly continue with my brembo disks and red stuff pads ( as its been for the last year) or try out the ferrodo /national setup.

Or course all this depends on if the vibration i get is from warped disks or the tie rod ends!
