I have tried the searching & came up with this:- Transfer box is gl5 75w-90 & contains around 0.7ltr?

Does the oil for the TFB have to be fully or part synthetic?

I don't have time to order amsoil so what other make would be good please? I've used comma before & that seems OK?

TIA

Has to be sever gear oil.
I think it is also called hypoid EP (extreme pressure) gear oil by some manufactures 75w-90 is the viscosity at cold and hot.
For really heavy use eg towing, etc my old jeep grand Cherokee used to get 75w-140 gear oil (or something like that). Stopped the diff whiling as well.

I've got a whining diff - is it worth trying some of this?

I did not mean use it in a vr4 diff, as I have never tried it. But it was a common thing to do in a Dana 65 LSD rear diff with friction mopar modifier added for the LSD.

I am not saying it will not work but a heavier grade oil will have other effect on the diff. And we do have ayc so I don't know that will be effect either.

I would have thought a heavier oil could be used in the transfer case as well, but I have no experience of this.
The manufactures specify the oils for a reason so I would not recommend you do use a heavier oil than the specified type, but I don't think it would do any harm to do a short term test.

The original use for the 140 weight oil was vintage diff's in old cars, and I presume it was because they used to use straight cut gear teeth and they used to be really noisy, even when they were running perfectly.
I am not sure but i presume the diff's in the vr4 will be helical cut gears which offer more surface area per tooth and mesh with much less noise. But that is usually the pinion and crown gear not the actual sun and planet gears in the diff core.

So GL5 ep 75w-90 will be OK to use?

Here are my two reference threads when people ask that kind of question. It looks like you have the right spec in mind.

Yes, Steve, that's what I stock for VR4 owners. If people want something else I ask them to provide it.
