View Full Version : I could do with a 6th gear...

I went on a drive the other day, me an a mate.

We ended up going to a place called Pataua (SP) east of Whangarei where my sister and brother in law were staying.

Cruising at reasonable speed I kept feeling like i should be shifting up a gear...

If I was (theoretically of course, I wouldn't speed...) traveling at 150km/h having another gear would have been much nicer. Would have been even better if I were (again, theoretically) to sit on the speed limiter for a little while.

What IS the limit anyway... the needle is a fair bit past the 180 mark when the limiter kicks in.

Considering that I travel around town mostly in 4th, 5th doesnt really seem like an overdrive.

Views anyone?

The limiter is supposed to be 112mph/180kph, but on most UK cars that still had a limiter, it was more like 120mph/190+kph.
Not often do I feel it needs a 6th gear, except on long boring motorway drives. :(

(it might help with the appalling MPG I get... ;) )

Hordak needs a 6th Gear. At 70mph, the motor is spinning at about 2600 rpm, It pulls well, but an overdrive would make it much nicer on long journeys.

Interestingly, my GLS (4 speed auto) didn't feel short geared on the motorway.

Yeh I would agree, mine could do with a sixth - My cav turbo had 6 gears and it was lovely for crusing motorways....

2600? Im sure my VR-4 is running about 3000 at 70mph! :rolleyes5
will check it on my way home :D

70mph (~110kmh) is just over 3000rpm in 5th

The VR4 cruising at 70-80mph revs about 500 rpm higher than the V6-24 which is what "Hordak" is. It was (the V6-24) the perfect motorway cruiser, it was just effortless.

I agree with Legnum Boy though, a 6th would have saved me ££££s in petrol with all the motorway miles I've done this Christmas :sad3: 18mpg on my last 100 mile m5/m6 run :lipsrseal

Wouldn't have much use for 6th at any other time though, in fact I rarely give it a chance to use 5th

I'm always using 5th around town doing almost 60km/h, I'd love a 6th gear (but I drive a manual). Sometimes I wonder how hard it would be to squeeze the Evo VIII gearbox into my Legnum.

Mines definately doing 80 mph @ 3000 revs in 5th.
5th gear is about 27mph per 1000 revs.
I have a pre-facelift Tiptronic box.
Can't see why it would be different to the facelift model?

Yep I agree I could definitely use a sixth gear, and mine is manual. I use 5th gear all the time around town..... saves a lot on fuel. But on dual carriageways and motorways a sixth gear would def be a bonus, almost essential in fact.

All 4 of the galants I have owned end up at 90mph at 3500 rpm. That works out at 25.7 mph per 1000 rpm.

I too would like a higher gear for motorway cruising - that little jump from 2800 rpm to 3300 rpm makes a MASSIVE mpg difference.

I need a 6th gear in mine then that bloody ferrari wouldnt have started pulling away from me when I hit the limiter in 5th doing just less that 150 ;)

I'm guessing Kenneth has a 5spd manual and not tiptronic ;)

I have a manual and it sits just above 3000rpm @ 70mph too.....

But I suppose it meens its always 'on boost' so for overtaking its good,

but I agree it definatley needs a 6th gear for cruising......
