I live near blackpool and the gearbox will not go through 3rd gear. It chucks itself in neutral. It does the same in tiptronic and auto. Does anyone know any close by specialists please?

Hi and /Welcome

I don't know a gbox specialist but I know where you can get a fully working auto gbox from recently breaking for parts vr4, if you need a fitting that's not a problem too, PM me, if you decide to change your gbox, for details. Gearbox/garage is located in Chorlton in Manchester.

Hi, thanks for replying. It is with a mechanic at the moment and he mentioned it needs a range value. He said it needs ordering from Japan??!! What is that do you know? I googled it but nothing came back.

If I understand correctly, a range valve is the hydraulic part of the gearbox that allows different clutches to be operated, causing the box to change gear.

Having said that, also if I understand correctly, it is an old term used for boxes that have no ECU. Boxes controlled by ECU's usually have solenoid controlled valves operated by the ECU rather than a pressure operated valve.

Our cars have solenoids, 6 in total, that the ECU operates to change gear.

I'm not sure if that helps you or not.

To be honest gear boxes are fairly cheap on here and replacing the box works out much cheaper than going through the whole round about of replace this replace that, not sure what's going on just replace this replace that and you get charge every time something gets changed, and nothing actually fixes the issue.

To get back to the point, have you changed anything recently, is you car standard or has it been modified, what is the condition of the the ATF fluid on the auto box.
Is it a bright cherry red when you wipe it on some kitchen fool paper, if so what spec is the ATF is it SPIII compliant if not then that could be the issue, our auto boxes are very dependant on useing the correct fluid. Dexron III is not good enough and will cause the auto box to fail..

Give as much info as you can as to the situation and we might be able to help you.
Auto box issues have been very well discussed on the site and if w can. Help we will.

I have a similar problem with my 99 auto box. I would love to locate a working auto box that will fit in my (otherwise superb) 99 Legnum. I live near Chorley.

Many thanks

Dave
