New track rod end has arrived with grease nipple fitted whereas the old one didn't have any.
Is there a particular type of grease recommended?

no it does not really matter as the are not load bearing joints as long as you pump grease in them until it starts to ooze out of one of the joints after you fit them it will be OK. as long as they are loobed up they should last well.
i have the same type of track rod ends, and when the wheels are off i give them a greasing.

Strangely enough the MOT was failed because grease was visible. (Argument being if grease comes out grit can get in - under "damaged seals"). I'll get some guidance from the MOTman.
Next problem getting the 17mm stay bolts undone (post #4 in http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?22450-Lower-Front-Suspension-Arm-%28Ball-Joint%29-Replacement ) - no success on Monday so just swamped it with WD-40.
Time to try again.

That's not a failure! A damaged seal is a damaged seal, ie a hole, rip or tear! If I don't see grease coming out of boots with nipples I question if the service was done!
